KOCHI, SEPT. 29. The Cochin Port Trust (CPT) has decided to service only three container vessels at the Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal (RGCT) at a time in view of the congestion experienced at the terminal since last week owing to heavy inflow of cargo and breakdown of crucial equipment. Reach stackers and transfer cranes are being repaired on a war footing to meet the congestion emergency. The CPT authorities had taken this and several other decisions after several rounds of discussions with mainline operators, Customs House and clearing agents on decongesting the RGCT. It had also been decided that containers for export would be allowed into the terminal only after the vessel being serviced sailed out. Containers had also been ordered to be carted out after completion of one shift of cargo operations after the vessel has berthed. Reefer exporters and Customs House Agents were instructed to cart containers into the terminal only after registration and confirmation of plug point availability. Twenty more plug points are being made available within three days.
