Partly cloudy sky forecast

NEW DELHI SEPT. 29. The weatherman has forecast a partly cloudy sky with possibility of thundery developments/ light rainfall in some areas of the Capital on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the maximum temperature at Safdarjang was 33.6 degrees Celsius while the minimum was 24.0 degrees Celsius. Palam recorded a maximum temperature of 33.8 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 25.7 degrees Celsius.

Safdarjang and Palam recorded a maximum humidity of 75 per cent and 64 per cent, while the minimum humidity at these two places were 44 per cent and 41 per cent respectively.

Shastri Award for Ela Bhatt

NEW DELHI SEPT. 29. The Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence in Public Administration, Academics and Management for 2003 will be conferred on Ela Ramesh Bhatt, founder general secretary of Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA). The President, APJ Adbul Kalam, will present the award to Ms. Bhatt on October 7.

Announcing this here today, Anil Shastri, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, Delhi, said the award carried Rs.1 lakh, a citation and a plaque. The awardee is also designated as Lal Bahadur Shastri Fellow.

Alleged auto lifters held

NEW DELHI SEPT. 29. Three persons, who were allegedly involved in auto-lifting cases, have been arrested from outside Maharaja Agarsen Hospital in West Delhi. Nine stolen vehicles were recovered from their possession.

Acting on a tip-off that an auto-lifter, Matin Ahmed, would come near Agarsen Hospital in a stolen Toyota Qualis on September 12, the police laid a trap and arrested him along with his accomplice, Digvijay. During interrogation, Matin disclosed he had come there to meet his accomplice, Arvind, who was expert at forging vehicle registration papers.

At his instance, the police also arrested Arvind.

Seven get

life term

NEW DELHI SEPT 29. Seven members of a family have been sentenced to life imprisonment in a 1995 dowry death case.

Additional Sessions Judge B B Choudhary also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each on convicts Madanmohan Agarwal, his wife Prem, sons Alok and Sudhir, relative Sunil Jain besides Sudhir's wife Suchitra and Sunil's wife Seema.

On November 5, 1995, Alok's wife Anjali committed suicide after all the accused tortured her mentally and physically to get dowry, police said.
