Loyola School emerges winners

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 30. The Loyola School, Sreekariyam, represented by Justin Thomas and Gautam Das, won the Thiruvananthapuram leg of `The Hindu-Young World Quiz 2004', and qualified for the all-India final scheduled to be held at Bangalore on November 5.

The duo from Loyola outwitted the challenge from Holy Angels ISC School, Nanthencode, Thiruvananthapuram, represented by Shalini S and M. Pooja Sankari, in the final round to take home a bonanza of prizes, including a trophy and cash prize of Rs.4,000. The runners-up bagged a booty, which included a cash prize of Rs.3,000.

Kishor Govind Nayar and Nikhi P. Joseph of Loyola School, Thiruvananthapuram, took third place to win a cash prize of Rs.2,000 along with other gifts.

Young talent

B. Vaidheeshwaran, Afsal Musaliar, S. Gouthaman and R. Murugan. Mr. Karun, who was the chief guest, said he was confident that the performance of the students showed that they would do the nation proud. Mr. Karun, who is the jury chairman for Indian Panorama selection of the coming International Film Festival of India, said the 120 films he watched in Delhi recently also showed the talent of the young filmmakers in the country.

The other finalists who also had their share of special prizes were Biju Prasad and Ram Narayan B (Infant Jesus AIHSS, Thangasseri, Kollam), Tibu Thomas Kodiyat and David Mathew Thomas (Mar Thoma Residential School, Thiruvalla) and Rosemary Cyriac and Rajalakshmi M (Holy Angels ISC, Nanthencode, Thiruvananthapuram).

The finalists were selected after a preliminary written round taken by as many as 316 teams representing 130 schools in the southern districts of the State. The 25 questions given in the written round were asked to the participants and prizes were given when the answer sheets were evaluated for selecting the six toppers for the final round.

Tie-breaker

The quizmaster, V.V. Ramanan, had to go for the tie-breaker question for deciding the fourth and fifth spots after Infant Jesus and Mar Thoma schools shared the same points after the completion of six rounds. The final round comprised six rounds, including two special rounds. The rounds were `Be choosy', `Anagramania', `Gallery', `Multi-media Masala', `Mere Bharat Mahan' and `Shootout'. The students who could not make it to the final round and others also were not left out by the quizmaster and they came up with some brilliant answers to walk home with prizes.

Fancy name

The prize for the best fancy title team name was bagged by Sulfia S. Santhosh and Megha Rajeev of Holy Angels School for their coinage `Fahrenheit 9/30' and the second prize for the best title team name went to Anton Babu and Lejo Jose of Loyola School for devising `Quizzito Ergo Sum', which means `I quiz therefore I am'.

The prize for the best out-station team was bagged by Achu S and Jaidel of Sree Narayana Public School, Kollam, and the second best out-station team went to Monu Rajan and Noufal Mohammed Basheer of Mar Thoma Residential School, Tiruvalla. The third prize in the category was bagged by Prince Dickson and E. Anish Profin of Carmel Higher Secondary School, Nagercoil.

Neelakanta Vidyapeethom walked away with the prize for the best cheering group. The lucky dip sponsored by Eveready was bagged by Jose Thomas of St. Mary's Central School, Poojappura.

The quiz was organised by the Chennai-based QUIZwallahs.

The national sponsors of the event were Eveready, ITC Expressions, Competition Success Review, Britannia, Dukes Chocolates, Canara Bank, Sify, Reynolds and Coca Cola. The regional sponsors were Supreme Nutrifud, Hotel South Park, Travancore Heritage, Oxford University Press, Welgate Group, Cambridge University Press, Quilon Radio Service, Lions Club of Trivandrum Central, British Library and Cycle Brand of Agarbathies.
