Appointed Vice-Chief of Air Staff

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM SEPT. 30. Air Marshal Sunil Kumar Malik, who relinquished his post as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Air Command today, will be taking charge as the new Vice-Chief of the Air Staff in New Delhi, according to a release issued by the Press Information Bureau. He was presented a ceremonial guard of honour at the Southern Air Command Headquarters this afternoon, the press release added.

KYF(M) to petition President

The Kerala Youth Front (M) today announced that it would petition the President of India, through the Governor, demanding action against the Kerala Public Service Commission, which, it alleged, had lost its credibility.

Prosecutors defend action

PATHANAMTHITTA SEPT. 30. The Kerala Assistant Public Prosecutors' Association today said that there was nothing wrong in the Deputy Director of Prosecution (DDP), G. Ramachandran Nair, appearing for the Finance Minister, Vakkom Purushothaman, before the Thiruvananthapuram Court in the Fax case. In a statement issued here, the association State president, Salim Kambisseri, said "Mr. Purushothaman is not an accused in the case and the DDP had appeared before the Court on behalf of the Minister on the basis of a Government direction to that extent". Expressing concern over the ill treatment of the DDP at the Court, Mr Kambisseri said the association would soon take up the matter with the High Court through the Director General of Prosecution.

Awards announced

KANNUR SEPT. 30 . Six awards instituted by the Kerala Mappilakala Academy in memory of six leading exponents of Mappilapattu were announced here today. The Mappilappattu singer, K.G. Sathar, the lyricist, M.A. Kalpetta, the singer and music director, V.T. Murali, the singers, M. Kunhimoosa, Cibella Sadanandan and the Doordarshan producer, P.K. Mohanan, were selected for the awards instituted in memory of the late T. Ubaid, O. Abu Sahib, Chandu Pasha, S.M. Koya, C.A. Aboobacker and Korambayil Ahmed Haji respectively. Announcing this here today, the academy president, P.H. Abdulla, and the general secretary, K. Rafeekh, said each award would carry cash component of Rs. 5,001, a citation and a statuette. Ten people who had made great contributions to their fields would be honoured at the function.

`Introduce economic reservation'

KOLLAM Sept. 30. The Akhila Kerala Brahmana Federation (AKBF) has welcomed the decision of the Union Cabinet to constitute a National Commission for the welfare of the socially and economically backward among the religious and linguistic minorities. In a statement here the AKBF president, K. Kumar Kini, and general secretary, N.K. Balasubramaniam, said that the Brahman community in Kerala views the decision with great expectations. By availing the reservation benefits many socially backward communities have progressed considerably. Hence the time has dawned for dropping community based reservation and in its place introduce economic reservation, the AKBF leaders said.

Seminar organised

The district unit of the Kerala Medical and Sales Representatives Association (KMSRA) organised a seminar on `The pharmaceutical industry and the people' here on Wednesday. The seminar was inaugurated by the CITU secretary, N. Padmalochanan. The subject was presented by the KMSRA general secretary, Lindsay Melville.
