Steps initiated on civic body upgradation

NELLORE, OCT.1. The State Government has given notice to the Nellore Municipality under the Andhra Pradesh Municipalities Act, 1965, as to why the civic body should not be abolished under section 3-A of the A.P. Municipalities Act, as it fulfilled the criteria to specify the areas covered under the municipality as larger urban area (Corporation). The explanation or objections should reach the Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Department, Hyderabad, within 10 days of the date of receipt of the said order, which is dated September 26, 2004.

Meet convened

Accordingly a meeting of the council has been convened for 10-30 a.m. on October 4, to consider the notice. The notice has clearly stated that if no reply is received within the stipulated period, it will be construed that there is no explanation to offer in the matter and further action will be taken as per material available with the Government.

The notice has mentioned how the Municipal Commissioner, Nellore, has submitted proposals for its upgradation to corporation. The Government has stated that the criteria prescribed for constitution of a corporation are satisfied in all respects. The main criterion for the corporation is a population of 4 lakhs in general, with 10,000 population per sq.km, annual revenue of Rs. 4 crores, potential for growth of industries and the number of peripheral villages whose growth and expansion are towards the proposed larger urban area.
