Heated exchanges mar council meeting

THANJAVUR, OCT.1. Heated exchanges marred the municipal council meeting here last evening when councillors questioned the Municipal Chairman, Sultan Mohideen, for cancelling the resolution on constructing a subway near the old bus stand.

T. Murugesan (CPM), councillor, who came to the meeting by closing his mouth with a piece of cloth and tying his hands with a rope, said that the Chairman was not following the procedures being adopted in council meetings.

Some other councillors joined hands with him and entered into heated exchanges with the chairman.

The meeting witnessed noisy scenes when some members including Carl Marx, Vriddhachalam and Murugesan questioned the Chairman for finalising and granting tender to the person, who had quoted a very high rate of Rs.30 for catching a stray dog in Thanjavur, ignoring the lowest tender rate of Rs.14 quoted by some other person.

They pointed out that it would lead to heavy loss for the municipality.

The Chairman adjourned the meeting without taking any decision on the two issues of subway and tender given for catching stray dogs as heated exchanges and noisy scenes marred the meeting.
