THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, OCT. 1. The Assistant Commissioner of Police (City Crime Detachment), Rajan George, was today arrested by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) from his office at Fort on the charge of accepting Rs. 40,000 as graft. According to VACB officials, Rajan George was arrested on the basis of a complaint given to the SP (Vigilance), P.K. Madhu, by one Philip Joseph. The complainant stated that the Assistant Commissioner had "demanded" Rs.40,000 as bribe for "closing" a criminal case filed against him by a private individual. The case had been under the investigation of the Crime Detachment Wing for the past two years. After recording his statement, the Vigilance gave Philip Joseph "marked" currency amounting to Rs.40,000. The currency was delivered at the office of the Assistant Commissioner on Wednesday evening. A Vigilance official said the "marked" currency was "recovered" from the custody of the Assistant Commissioner by the Vigilance team. An official said the accused would be produced before the Vigilance court on Saturday.
