PONDICHERRY, OCT. 2. The Lt. Governor of Pondicherry, M.M. Lakhera, the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, and his cabinet colleagues, the Assembly Speaker, M.D.R. Ramachandran, MLAs, and officials paid floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on Beach Road here on his birth anniversary today. The Local Administration Minister, A. Elumalai, planted saplings at the Gandhi Thidal under a scheme launched by the Bharat Ratna MGR Social Service organisation. More than 125 senior citizens took out a padayatra from near the premises of PONCARE (Society for the Care of the Aged sponsored by the Pondicherry administration) at Brindavanam to the Beach Road. The Department of Neurology of the Pondicherry Government General Hospital was co-sponsor of the padayatra. Addressing the participants at the end of the padayatra, the Development Commissioner, B.V. Selvaraj, said the administration had formulated a scheme `counselling by the elders' to make use of the experience and knowledge of the aged for the benefit of the up-and-coming generation.
Kamaraj remembered
Mr. Rangasamy, accompanied by his cabinet colleagues and the Speaker paid homage at the statue of Kamaraj on his death anniversary.
