Depression in Bay

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, OCT. 2. The north coastal areas of the State came under a storm threat on Saturday when a well-marked low pressure area over south-east Bay of Bengal concentrated into a depression and lay about 650 km south-east of Machilipatnam.

According to preliminary indications, the system was likely to intensify further turning into a deep depression and move in a north-westerly direction.

Heavy rain likely

Under its influence, the districts of Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur and Krishna are in for heavy rain on Sunday. A forecast issued by the State Met Office says that rain is likely at many places in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema and at a few places in Telangana but in a "light to moderate form".

Districts alerted

Although the coast crossing of the system is away by days going by the 650-km distance it has to cover, the Government has alerted these districts.

During the 24-hour period ending this morning, there was rain at a few places in Telangana and Rayalaseema and it was isolated in coastal Andhra. Bapatla, Mahabubnagar, Kaleswaram recorded each 4 cm; Dummagudem 3 cm; and Chittoor, Vijayawada Airport, Eturu Nagaram, Owk and Rajahmundry each 2 cm.
