Kuvempu's call still relevant
TUMKURDHARWADMADIKERIDHARWAD, OCT. 2.OCT. 2.OCT. 2 G.S. Shivarudrappa, poet, said on Saturday that the call given by Kuvempu to eradicate poverty was relevant even today. Inaugurating the two-day Kuvempu Birth Centenary Celebrations at Karnatak University here, Dr. Shivarudrappa said Kuvempu had favoured primacy for Kannada in the State. He recalled how Kuvempu had put some conditions on the status to be given to Kannada when Karnatak University offered to confer a doctorate degree on him. It was only when the conditions were honoured three years later Kuvempu agreed to accept the doctorate, he said. Dr. Shivarudrappa released a book on Kuvempu's thinking by the retired district judge, Ko. Chennabasappa. Chennavira Kanavi, poet, welcomed the gathering. Khaja Peer, Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University, presided over the function. G.M. Hegde proposed a vote of thanks.
Dharna for rights over trees
TUMKURDHARWADMADIKERIDHARWAD, OCT. 2.OCT. 2.OCT. 2 Members of the Kodagu Raitha Sangha staged a dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on Saturday demanding that the State Government accord rights over trees to landowners in Kodagu. The honorary president of the sangha, A.K. Subbaiah, the secretary general, Neravanda Umesh, the working president, Ravi Thammaiah, and the members, Nanda Subbaiah, B.T. Pradeep, Nanda Ganapathi, B.S. Ramanath and P.S. Belliappa, participated in the dharna. They urged the district administration to set right the anomalies in RTC (record of rights) entries. If the RTC issue was solved, it would help in solving many problems faced by farmers in the district. They appealed to the Government to waive the interest on farm loans and fix minimum support price to coffee. The Forest Department should stop "harassing" those who had been cultivating forest land for many years. Many had "pattas" issued by the Revenue Department, they claimed.
