Collaborative research
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
Oct. 2.
The Sree Buddha College of Engineering at Nooranad in Alappuzha and the Laboratory of Microbial Biotechnology, France, have decided to conduct collaborative research in the field of Biotechnology. Christopher Augur, Senior Scientist from the Laboratory of Microbial Biotechnology, visited the college recently and held discussions with faculty members and management in this connection. The students of Biotechnology had an interactive session with him. K. Sasikumar, chairman of the college, said Dr. Christopher would be visiting the college frequently as a visiting professor for the benefit of the students.
Peace meet
As many as one lakh people are expected to participate in the mega peace meet, `Maha tapasvinis' sangamam' to be held at the Shangumugham beach on October 10. The meet, being organised by the Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya, is meant for promoting peace and communal harmony the world over. Similar mass meditation sessions were held in various metros in the country. A session has been planned in Jammu and Kashmir too. Rajayogini Dadi Janaki, the additional administrative head of the Brahma Kumaris, would lead the meditation session at 4 p.m. A cultural programme directed by Soorya Krishna Moorthy with the message of peace and amity and a devotional music programme of M.G. Sreekumar too have been organised as part of the meet.
Swadeshi sangamam
A two-day get-together of persons engaged in the production and distribution of swadeshi products will get underway in the VJT Hall at Thiruvananthapuram tomorrow. Being organised jointly by the Information and Public Relations Department, the Gandhian Study Centre of the University of Kerala and the State Gandhi Darshan Samithi, the sangamam is meant for spreading the swadeshi concept throughout the State. An exhibition of swadeshi products is also being organised in connection with the sangamam. Indigenously made consumer products like hair oil, hair tone, herbal shampoo, whitener, hand, car and floor wash, liquid dish wash and closet cleaner are among the items which will figure at the exhibition. The Health Minister, K.K. Ramachandran, will inaugurate a seminar on "Globalisation and Gram Swaraj" being held on the second day. The keynote address will be delivered by Thalekunnil Basheer.
KSEB to recruit 4,000
The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) will recruit some 4,000 persons to various categories soon. An assurance in this regard was reportedly given by the Electricity Minister, Aryadan Mohammed, to a delegation of the Kerala Electricity Employees Confederation which called on and held talks with him recently. The delegation consisted of C. Ramachandran Nair, Sajeev Janardhanan, Kalliyoor Murali and Salim Rauther. According to them, the recruitment would be preceded by a round of promotions for those from the post of Lineman to that of Assistant Engineer. The proposal was to fill the existing vacancies and the vacancies caused by the promotions together by including it in the 100 days' action programme of the Government.
Singapore team visits Alappuzha
ALAPPUZHA

A four-member Singapore based team of investors today visited various parts of the district to identify potential areas of investment. The team, lead by chairman of Aman Group of hotels, explored the possibility of investment in the tourism sector in Alappuzha, said the Tourism Minister, K.C. Venugopal. He said the team had plans of for huge investment in the tourism sector. After discussions they visited various parts of Kuttanad. The District Collector, K.M. Ramanandan, accompanied them.
Award presented
KOZHIKODE

Lt. Col. P.R. Menon, hailing from Kozhikode, has been awarded the N.V. Gadadhar Memorial Award instituted by the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers and given annually for distinguished contribution in the field of electronics and telecommunications. His invention of a unique mobile ad hoc networking protocol that facilitates networking of hand-held computers over radio links had been considered for the prestigious award. The award consisted of a gold medal, citation and a purse of Rs.10,000. The Light Combat Aircraft Project associate director, P.S. Subramaniom, was the chief guest and who presented the award at a function in Bangalore.
Free cataract detection camp
KOZHIKODE
OCT. 2.
A free cataract surgery detection camp was organised in connection with Gandhi Jayanti today. The station director of AIR, Kozhikode, C.P. Rajashekaran, inaugurated the camp organised by AIR Kozhikode Station, Calicut Young Brahmins Association and Lions Club of Calicut with the cooperation of Comtrust Eye Hospital. A total of 1,800 people participated. A total of 707 persons were selected for surgery.
Study class
A study class on military pension benefits, rehabilitation schemes for ex-servicemen, and ex-servicemen contributory health scheme will be held at Nalanda Auditorium at 10 a.m. on October 3.
Passes away
K. Damodara Shenoy, freedom fighter and founder-member of Calicut Foodgrains Merchants Association, died here today. He was 83. He is survived by a son and two daughters. Damodaran Shenoy had quit his studies to join the freedom struggle when he was a student in Mangalore.
Riverside resort
KANNUR
OCT. 2.
Kairali Heritage, the first riverside resort in the district, will be opened, by the Tourism Minister, K.C. Venugopal, on October 4. The resort located in a 10-acre plot on the banks of the Kattampally river, has rustic ambience and modern facilities, U.K. Nambiar, Managing Director of the resort's promoters, Cannanore County Club and Resorts, said at a press conference here.
