Bhavan's Adarsh Vidyalaya emerges winner

KOCHI, OCT. 2. They fought all the way to glory. The winners of the regional round of The Hindu-Young World Quiz 2004 held at the Toc-H Indoor Stadium, Vyttila, on Saturday deserved all the accolades they got at the end of the tightly fought contest.

The team of Bhaskar S. Nair and Hari S. Nair of the Bhavan's Adarsh Vidyalaya, Kakkanad, was tied with two others for qualifying to the final round. Five others qualified by score and the brother-duo, who named their team as Quizildor's Bane, fought their way into the finals after eight questions. A total of 380 students participated in the preliminary rounds.

The finalists included Azmi Habeer and Ram Kesav A of Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara, who were the national winners of the last edition of The Hindu-Young World Quiz. The defending champions, calling themselves Quizzing Tendulkar and Stylendar Sehwag, were in third position.

The runner-up in Saturday's contest was the team from Harisri Vidyanidhi School, Thrissur, Hrishikesh Varma and Arun Chandran V, who called themselves Numero Uno. The other finalists were Anand Shankar K. and N. Sadashiv from the Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara, titled Two American Pies, Nikhil George Punnoose and Mikhail Jacob of Pallikkoodam, Kottayam, calling themselves Quizira Gandhi and Ansiriman Quizinackle and Arun Narayanan and Gitanjali Maria from the Cochin Refineries School, Ambalamughal, calling themselves Pot Shot.

The teams competed for honours through six rounds, one of which was exclusively on Mahatma Gandhi. At times, the audience came up with the correct answers for questions that the finalists could not answer such as the one on who gave Gandhiji the nickname Bapu, the answer being indigo planters of Champaran.

Team name

There were prizes for creativity too, along with that for quizzing. Ajay Mathew and Ashok Krishnan of Choice School, Thripunithura, won the prize for the best team name, The Quizstreet Boys. Jayashankar and Manoj of the Sivagiri Vidyaniketan School of Thottumukham, Aluva, won the prize for the second-best team name, The In Quizitives.

Best outstation team

Moulik K.B. and Gokul Raghunath of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Thrissur, under the team name Quizziano Ronaldo and Brain Rooney, were adjudged the best outstation team, Vishnu Dev A and Sudarshan Vishnu of the Bhavan's Newsprint Vidyalaya, Velloor, team name Quiztopher Columbus and Amerigo Quizpucci, and Harikrishna B and Vishnu B of SDV ENHSS, Alappuzha, with team name Lal Bahadur Gandhi, were adjudged the second and third-best outstation team respectively.

Television actor Prakash Paul of Kadamattathu Kathanar fame presented the awards to the winners. Sudhakaran Nair, Business Head of BPL GSM Mobile and Sivanath, Area Marketing Manager of Indian Airlines, both regional sponsors of the event, were also present at the award ceremony.

Eveready was the title sponsor of the event. The other national sponsors were ITC Expressions Classmate Note Books, Competition Success Review, Britannia, Dukes Chocolates, Canara Bank, Sify, Reynolds and Coca-Cola. And, along with BPL GSM Mobile and Indian Airlines, First Citizen,Top Ramen, and Cycle brand Agarbathy were the regional sponsors.
