Nellore
By Our Staff Reporter
NELLORE, OCT.2. The former Information Minister, S. Chandramohan Reddy, has lashed out at the State Government for its inability to supply Telugu Ganga water to Nellore district, despite enough water being available in the concerned canals and districts like Cuddapah and Kurnool getting the benefit. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, he referred to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's `benevolence', in conceding the request of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to release 10,000 cusecs of water. Does it mean, that the people of Nellore, have to thank Ms. Jayalalithaa for allowing people here to have water, as the quantity has to pass through Nellore, before entering the Poondi canal, on the Chennai border.
`Assurance'
Also at a public meeting held at Nellore earlier this week, the Chief Minister, reportedly assured the Union Minister for Road Transport, T.R. Balu, that the TGP water will reach Chennai borders before October 15. Mr. Chandramohan Reddy, however made it clear that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), never opposed the supply of drinking water to Chennai, as it was bound to get water as per a statutory agreement. The ire of Mr. Reddy was the Chief Minister's initial approval to release just a pittance of 1,000 cusecs for Nellore from Srisailam release, out of a promised 3,000 cusecs, which were not sufficient for farm purposes. He pointed that as on today, Somasila reservoir has got 13.5 tmcft of water and Srisailam got 880 ft. level.
