By Our Staff Reporter
NELLORE, OCT. 2. The Collector and District Magistrate, B. Rajsekhar, has stressed upon the reformist attitude towards prisoners during the time when they were serving their prison term.
Measures introduced
The official, who was the chief guest at the "Prisoners'Welfare Day'' at the Central Prison, Nellore, on Saturday, referred to the days when once the jails were looked down with contempt and the prisoners sought to be taught a lesson, resembling a virtual hell, simply because they were involved in crimes. Now a lot has changed with the Government having introduced several measures for the welfare of prisoners to transform them into reformed persons, so that they can lead a normal life after their release. The Collector also referred to various trades being imparted to prisoners and informed that there were clear instructions for Government Departments, to purchase furniture etc. from the prisons. It was with a view to make the prisoner a well reformed person that literacy was also introduced on a large scale. Mr. Rajsekhar, pointed that Gandhiji's ideals stood the test of the time and will continue to be more relevant now.
Open air jails
The Superintendent of Police, B. Sivadhar Reddy, made a reference to open-air jails at places like Adavivaram, near Visakhapatnam, which resembled a residential school. Such welfare measures were intended to bring upon a change among the prisoners, he pointed. New skills were imparted to the inmates of prisons, so that after their release, they should go as completely transformed persons. The First Additional District and Sessions Judge, E. Srinivasa Raju, IVth Additional Judge, Nagamaruthi Sarma and others spoke. Earlier, the Jail Superintendent, J. Rama Govindaiah, informed that an open-air jail was coming up near Venkachalasatram, in an area of 75 acres. The inmates have produced furniture and steel desks, worth nearly Rs. 9 lakhs, during this year, he informed. The speakers appreciated the gesture of V. Prabhakara Reddy, who donated 4 black and white TVs and 400 steel plates/tumblers to the prison inmates.
