ISLAMABAD, OCT. 2. The Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, has promoted the Inter-Services Intelligence chief, Ehsanul Huque, to the rank of General and appointed him chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. Corp Commander, Karachi, Ahsan Saleem Hayat, has been appointed the Vice-Chief of the Army Staff. The latest appointments assume importance in the context of the debate on whether Gen. Musharraf will keep his promise to quit as Army Chief of Staff and continue as a civilian President. Gen. Musharraf, who reached retirement age in October 2001, extended his tenure indefinitely. Last December, as part of an agreement with the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), he agreed to quit the Army. In return the conglomerate of religious parties endorsed his controversial amendments to the Constitution and ratified his election as President through the referendum.
