KOCHI, OCT. 2. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has alleged that some local people had blocked the transportation of 300 tonnes of sulphur to the FACT, near the Champakkara bridge on September 30. The sulphur was being carried in Bhavana, a barge of the Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation (KSINC). This also blocked the way of people travelling by country boats to fetch potable water, as water hyacinth had accumulated in the waterway. Under the provisions of the IWAI Act, causing obstruction to navigation in the National Waterway is a punishable offence.
Plea to authorities
The Authority has taken serious note of such acts and proposes to seek the assistance of the district administration in preventing such incidents and also creating awareness on the benefits of inland navigation. The National Waterway III is an infrastructure project available only to Kerala and its success depends on the co-operation and support that it receives from the local community, the IWAI has stated.
