Rich tributes paid to Mahatma

VISAKHAPATNAM, OCT. 2. A peace walk, blood donation camps, seminars on religious harmony and meetings marked the celebrations of the 135th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in the city on Saturday.

The District Judge, N. Vidyaprasad, flagged off the peace walk organised by Mahila Chaitanya Sravanthi (MCS) on the district court premises in the morning. A student of Timpany School, A.V.V. Ravi Teja, clad in Mahatma's robes, led the walk which reached the Gandhi statue on Allipuram Main Road via the main thoroughfares.

The Family Court Judge, Leelavathi, the MCS chairperson, D. Venkatalakshmi Arrabolu, and its secretary, Jagadeeswara Rao, garlanded the Gandhi statue.

Blood donation

The Principal Senior Civil Judge, Syamala Devi, the I Additional Senior Civil Judge, Dharma Rao, the former Chairman of Bar Council of India, D.V. Subba Rao, and the Bar Association president, N. Madhava Rao, and others participated in the programme.

Some 70 employees of Hy-Grade Pellets Limited, a joint venture company of Essar Steel and Stemcor UK, donated blood to celebrate Gandhi Jayanthi at the plant premises. The company's General Manager, K. Bhaktavatsalam, and its senior officers, Willy Bhokeff, A.S. Prasad and K. Prasad, were among the donors. The HGPL General Manager, Suresh Dorbala, and the Rotary Blood Bank chairman, Kishore Kumar, spoke.

The Lions Club of Vizag and Lions Club of VSP-Swarna Bharathi conducted a blood donation camp at KGH Blood Bank in which 25 members participated. The former MLA, S.A. Rehaman, inaugurated the camp which was coordinated by Shirin Rahman, Shyam Prasad, and Ravi Chandra.

Fifty Anjaniputra Chiranjeevi Fans donated blood at the camp organised to celebrate the day. The camp was inaugurated by the noted physician, Kootikuppala Surya Rao, in Kancharapalem.

Statue garlanded

Rich tributes were paid by city leaders at the celebrations organised by the local Bharatiya Janata Party unit. Its senior leader, P.V. Chalapathi Rao, the city unit president, B. Ramamohan Rao, and the general secretary, S.V.S. Prakash Reddy, garlanded the statue at Allipuram.

Later, the BJP leaders also organised the birth centenary celebrations of the former Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri, who was also born on October 2.

The city MLAs, Dronamraju Satyanarayana and S. Rangaraju, participated in the birth anniversary celebrations of Gandhiji and Lal Bahadur Shastri at the party office. The city Congress president, Dronamraju Srinivas, presided over the function in which many leaders of frontal organisations, minorities and corporators took part.

At the Municipal High School in Madhuranagar, the Additional Municipal Commissioner, Asha Jyothi, and the District Supply Officer, M.G.L. Narasimha Rao, participated in the celebrations and gave away prizes to winners in competitions conducted by the school. The Lions Club secretary, Jaganmohana Rao, spoke.

Painting contest

At Ukkunagaram, a painting competition for children was conducted on the day in which about 500 children from various age groups took part. Ms. Chinnamma Rao and Ms. Vidya Das inaugurated the programme sponsored by Rama Naidu Jewellers.

The City Gems School organised a seminar on the theme, `Religion--Non-violence', to celebrate the event. The social worker, I.M. Ahmed, coordinated the seminar in which the noted physician, N. Srinivasa Rao, the retired Additional Superintendent of Police, R.V. Raju, the Project Director of Women and Child Welfare, A.E. Robert, the Mahaveer Jain International president, Kamal Baid, the social workers, Farooqui, I.M. Basha, Narava Prakasa Rao and Umarani, participated.

The jayanthi was also celebrated at the SC Boys Hostel in Madhavadhara by Sree Venkateswara Seva Sangham which distributed sweets to the inmates.
