Letters to the Editor
Sir, The setting up of a commission for the backward sections among the minorities is a retrograde step. The appeasement of the minorities is being done with an eye on the votes. Religion cannot be a benchmark for a quota system. To widen the ambit of reservation is detrimental to the social order. Caste is a stratification of society, segmenting groups in watertight compartments. Religion is not. One can change one's religion and even refuse to be tagged under any religion.
Hilda Raja,
* * * Sir, Reservation was included in our Constitution to bring the deprived classes into the mainstream. But this objective has been systematically used by our politicians to become champions of a particular caste, class or religion. The latest move to set up a commission is also in this direction. At this rate, society will be divided into two classes reserved and unreserved.
Sheshank Thakur,
