VISAKHAPATNAM, OCT. 3. The Minister for Social Welfare, D.S. Redya Naik, on Sunday said that the State Government would launch a special scheme for providing houses to five lakh tribals at a cost of Rs.30 crores. He was speaking to reporters after inspecting the social welfare hostels in the city at Bheemunipatnam. Mr. Naik said that the special housing scheme would be launched shortly, adding they would distribute hawaii chapals free of cost to the inmates in all the social welfare (SW) hostels under a project named `Hai.'
Condition of buildings
On the growing incidence of corruption in SW hostels, the Minister said that the Congress Government would not spare anyone found indulging in corrupt practices. He said that of 2,312 SW hostels in the State, 1,266 had their own buildings. While 350 buildings were under construction, all other hostels were functioning in rented premises. A sum of Rs.8 crores had been provided for undertaking repairs to existing buildings.
Financial assistance
He said that they were in the process of sanctioning Rs.170 crores for giving a facelift to 85 residential schools, which were in a dilapidated condition.
The Minister said the Government would sanction financial assistance to the tune of Rs.210 crores to 1.12 lakh SC persons through the SC Finance Corporation.
Of the Rs.210 crores, Rs.90 crores would be advanced in the form of subsidy and Rs.106 crores as loan through various financial institutions.
