MANGALORE, OCT. 3. Rahul Shandilya, overnight joint leader with Sriram Kote and Naveen Hegde, won the two-day State level rapid chess tournament here on Sunday. While Rahul's (8) only loss came against eventual runner-up Sriram Sarja (7) of Shimoga, Sriram and Naveen slipped from Saturday to finish eighth and 10th respectively. Rahul with a progressive score of 42 bagged the Margadarshi Rapid King Trophy for his efforts. Sriram pipped Tej Kumar (7) of Mysore to the second spot on a better progressive score of 39 to 33. Vijendra Y.G. (6.5) of Mysore took fourth place and Sudhir S. (6.5) of Bangalore, the fifth. Srinivas P.V. (6.5) of Shimoga finished sixth in the open category.
Category winners: Boys: under-8: Girish A. Koushik (7), Mysore; under-10: Prajwal Salian (7), Basarikatte; under-12: Prathik (7), Bantwal; under-14: Mithun D.J. (6), Bantwal.
Girls: under-8: Shalini Pais (6), Mangalore; under-10: Kripa Jain (6), Bangalore; under-12: Prajna D'Silva (4), Mangalore; under-14: Iora Pinto (5), Mangalore.
Best woman player: Pallavi Mayya, Mangalore. Promising talent: Gahan M.G., Mangalore and Pratheeka G., Mangalore.
