41 illicit brewers give up traditional vocation
By Our Special Correspondent
SALEM,
OCT. 3.
A group of 41 illicit brewers from Varagampadi near here came forward to renounce their traditional vocation of brewing arrack from today. The police destroyed fermented wash worth Rs. 2 lakhs in the village after a raid.
Officials said the brewers including two women came to the Office of the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) here and offered to surrender.
According to PEW inspector continuous raids were launched against the illicit brewing. Since Varagampadi had the distinction of having the traditional notoriety for brewing and selling liquor, the police erected permanent check posts and posted pickets round-the-clock in the village. Unable to bear these raids, the villagers surrendered 17 persons, who were listed as absconders in the police list. These offenders were arrested and remanded to custody today. The villagers also promised the officials that henceforth they would not indulge in brewing of liquor. A senior official said necessary steps were taken to rehabilitate them.
