TUTICORIN, OCT. 3. S.P. Sethuraman of Chennai, who has won the title with a round to spare on Saturday, was defeated by P. Phoobalan of Coimbatore in the last and 11th round of the Spic Trophy FIDE-rated open chess tournament at the Spic Nagar Community Hall here on Sunday. Sethuraman, unbeaten till then, tallied 9.5 points. Second seed M.B. Muralidharan of Kerala finished second with 9 points. Six players, O.T. Anilkumar (Kerala), Syed Anwar Shazuli (ICF), M. Vinothkumar (Che), P. Phoobalan (Cbe), defending champion B.T. Murali Krishna (Southern Railway) and Prabakaran (Tly) all tallied 8 points but were placed third to eighth in that order on progressive score. As this tournament doubles up as the Tuticorin district championship, four players from this tournament qualify for the Tamil Nadu State championship. They are: P. Stanly, T. Chinnadurai, P. Dharmaraj and P. Rajasekharan. T. Vinothkumar of Masters' Chess Academy, Nagercoil won the non-medallist title with 9 points out of possible 9. Mr. R. Muthu Manoharan, vice-president (operations), of Spic, presided and gave away the prizes.
Non-medallist: 1. T. Vinothkumar 9, 2. Vikash Raja Samuel 8, (3 to 5, 7 pts) S.S. Manigandan, T. Ajay, M.S. Kamalakannan.
