VISAKHAPATNAM, OCT. 3 . Heavy rain, under the influence of a depression in the Bay of Bengal, lashed several coastal districts today. Many places in the coastal districts from Srikakulam to Krishna received rainfall ranging from six cm to two cm. Hindupur in Anantapur district, received 7 cm. According to the Director of the Cyclone Warning Centre here, J.V.M. Naidu, the depression might intensify into a cyclonic storm by Monday afternoon and cross the coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam. All coastal districts from Guntur to Srikakulam were likely to receive widespread rain. A cyclone alert had been issued to the districts. If it intensified, the Telangana districts might also receive heavy rain, he added. Dr. Naidu told The Hindu that the South-West Monsoon was still prevalent and the North-East Monsoon had not set in. It was a transition phase in which the depression might stagger up to two days before it crossed the coast. Kochi and several parts of Tamil Nadu also received phenomenal rain. He said that it was beneficial since it would bring more rain.
