Law and order in Rayalaseema reviewed

KURNOOL: The Additional DGP, V. Dinesh Reddy, reviewed the law order situation in Rayalaseema districts at a meeting of SPs here on Sunday. The SPs -- Sajjanar (Cuddapah), R.S. Praveen Kumar (Anantapur) and V.R.K. Mohan Rao (Kurnool) -- the IG, Rayalaseema zone, R.P. Meena, the DIGs -- A.B. Venkateswara Rao and Jayarami Reddy -- attended the meeting.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Dinesh Reddy said the factionists who fomented law and order trouble would be tried under the Andhra Pradesh Prevention of Dangerous Activity Act, Andhra Pradesh Prevention of Antisocial and Hazardous Activity Act and Andhra Pradesh Habitual Offenders Act which would give powers to the authorities to restrict the movement of accused.

He said the blue fox operation aimed at unearthing illegal weapons and other anti-social activities was yielding good result.

Call to help Government fight tuberculosis

HYDERABAD: The Governor, S.S. Barnala, urged different sections of society to contribute their mite by buying TB seals and help fight tuberculosis, a programme being run by the Government.

He gave away rolling shields and institutional awards for the best performers in the TB seal campaign. Guntur collected Rs. 5.12 lakhs and came first, followed by Mahbubnagar with Rs. 4.15 lakhs and Medak with Rs. 1.4 lakhs. The function was organised by the Tuberculosis Association of Andhra Pradesh.

The Director, Health, G. Mastan Rao, also spoke.

The Joint Director, Medical and Health (TB Control) read out messages received from the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh while the honorary general secretary of the association, presented a report on its activities.

YSR to campaign in Mumbai

Hyderabad: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will campaign in Mumbai on October 6 for Congress candidates in the fray for the Assembly elections in Maharashtra.

Dr. Reddy will address meetings in Dharavi, Dadar and Matunga constituencies where Telugus form a sizable section of the electorate. Varsha Gaikwad, Rajan Bhonsle and Jagannadh Shetty are the Congress nominees in these constituencies respectively.

Party sources said Dr. Reddy had no plans to campaign in Maharashtra but the MPCC as well as the AICC persuaded him to woo the Telugu-speaking voters in a handful of constituencies. The Chief Minister will reach Mumbai on October 6 afternoon and return here the next morning.

`Palle bata' in Nellore

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will visit several villages in Tada mandal of Nellore district and interact with people on October 4 and 5 as part of the next round of the `Rajiv Palle Baata'.

He will conduct a review meeting at the District Rural Development Agency in the district headquarters. Consequent to this programme, Dr. Reddy will not be available for visitors in the camp office (Lakeview Guesthouse) in Hyderabad on both days.

Award for student

HYDERABAD: Shaik Fazlullah, a student of B. Tech final year, has been selected for the prestigious Editor's Choice award, 2004 for his poem `A Hope in the Dark' to be presented by Poetry.com and the International Library of Poetry, USA.

"It displays a unique perspective and original creativity, judged to be the qualities most found in exceptional poetry," the Poetry.com Managing Editor, Howard Ely, has said.

Shaik Fazlullah is among the 33 poets whose artistry will be recorded as a special part of a new CD poetry collection -- The Sound of Poetry.

"I started writing poems when I was just four," recalls Fazlullah, a student of Vazir Sultan College of Engineering at Khammam. He has so far written 25 poems. Interestingly, his father S.M. Zafarullah, who is a professor at Vidya Jyothi Institute of Technology here, is also a poet.

Office-bearers elected

HYDERABAD: L. Satyanarayana, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of ECIL-Rapiscan, has been elected president of Electronics Industries Association of Andhra Pradesh for 2004-06.

Mr. Satyanarayana joined the Atomic Energy Establishment in 1960 and later served the ECIL for over 26 years in various capacities, according to a press release.

The other members elected to the executive body included A. Madhavan (vice-president), G.N.V. Satyanarayana (vice-president), G. Srinivas Rao (honorary secretary), Suresh Habber (joint secretary) and G. Raghuraju (treasurer). T. Prabhakar, P. Shiva Prasad, U. Rama Krishna, S. Ravi, K. Vanu Babu, G. Manohar Reddy and Babu Reddy have been elected members.

PW denies police charge

ONGOLE: The People's War has rebutted the charge of the police that it has kidnapped the Gundamcharla village secretary, Ch. Subbarami Reddy, in Pedaraveedu mandal. The PW leaders claimed that they called Mr. Reddy on Saturday only to know the problems being faced by villagers and asked him whether farmers were getting bank loans or not.

It was stated that he was called by naxalites when he was boarding a bus for Markapur. He met naxalite leaders who had asked him about the welfare of people and allowed him to go within one hour.

Later, Nallamala People's War secretary, Sagar, told reporters that the charge made by the police was baseless. The PW was committed to maintain peaceful atmosphere in view of the ongoing talks with the Government, he said.

Couple commits suicide

NELLORE: A couple of Gudur town, D. Subba Reddy (25) and Sujata (18), committed suicide in Valayanandapuram on Saturday.

While the wife hanged herself the husband had reportedly consumed pesticide. Financial problems were said to be the reason for the extreme step.

Medical camp organised

ADILABAD: A health camp was organised at Jainad mandal headquarters on Sunday by the district Handicapped Welfare Department and the National Institute of Mentally Handicapped. Children of Jainad and Bela mandals were examined for various handicaps at the camp.

The Adilabad MLA, C. Ramchander Reddy, and the district Collector, J. Sudha Rani, distributed pensions, crutches and tricycles among the beneficiaries.

Later, on a surprise visit to the Social Welfare Boys Hostel at Jainad, the Collector pulled up officials on receiving complaints from boarders that substandard food was being served. The Joint Collector, V. Durga Das, and the RDO, Ashok Kumar Naik, were also present.

On receiving a complaint about non-supply of textbooks, Ms. Sudha Rani ordered supply of the same by Monday.

Earlier, the Collector attended a programme at the Adilabad Rythu Bazar organised by the Sham Youth Club to promote food items prepared with soyabean.

Girijana Ikya Vedika protest

KHAMMAM: The Girijana Ikya Vedika, a forum floated by various tribal organisations including the Tudum Debba and the Adivasi Girijana Sangham staged a `rasta roko' in Bhadrachalam town on Sunday seeking stringent measures for the implementation of scheduled area regulation 1/70. Led by the leaders S. Veeraiah, Chichidi Srirammurthy, Korsa Chittibabu and others, tribals took out a rally denouncing occupation of lands belonging to tribals by non-tribals in violation of the regulation in the sub-plan area. The Vedika leaders have been on relay hunger strike in the temple town for about a fortnight. They threatened to intensify the stir if the administration failed to respond positively on their demands.

He gave the assurance when some women confronted him near YS guest house here expressing fear that house site patta distribution could be hit by the transfer of the Chintakommadinne MRO, Prakash.

CUDDAPAH: A railway gang mazdoor, Kottam Gangaiah (53), was run over by a tractor near Kanumulopalle in Siddhavatam mandal early on Sunday morning. Gangaiah was standing on the roadside when the mishap occurred. The Siddhavatam police registered a case.

HYDERABAD: Former Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Penukonda in Anantapur district, D.V. Kannaji Rao, who was posted in Crime Investigation Department, has been suspended on charges of "evading his legitimate duty and indulging in feigned sickness". An official press release said Mr. Rao was abstaining from duty and disobeying orders of superior officers.

Village servants' rally

CUDDAPAH: Village servants took out a protest rally in Cuddapah town on Sunday, demanding minimum wages and promotion as village secretaries. The vice-president of Cuddapah District Village Servants Association, N. Venkataramana, demanded a monthly minimum wage of Rs. 2,600 and promoting eligible village servants as village secretaries. The divisional general secretary, N. Ramachandraiah, said village servants would stage dharna before all the MRO offices on October 8 and picket the Collectorate on October 25.

Birth anniversary of Nivedita

TIRUPATI: Many service programmes marked the celebration of the birth anniversary of `Sister' Nivedita under the auspices of Seva Bharathi. In the orthopaedic camp held in the Vivekananda Health Centre nearly fifty patients were screened and treated. Singaraju Lokanadha Raju, from the well-known 'Puttur' Bone Setters Hospital was the chief guest at the camp. A free medical camp was also organised. The organisation also inaugurated a mobile library.
