A versatile person

Sir, — Raja Ramanna, yet another distinguished son of Karnataka, has died. He was an outstanding scientist who put India on the nuclear energy map, an accomplished musician and a multifaceted personality who could speak on any subject from nuclear science to music and philosophy.

The glowing tributes paid to him right from the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and top scientists of the country speak of the high respect he was given.

Dr. Kalam said that Raja Ramanna was his mentor and guide. I am sure Raja Ramanna will be considered for the Bharat Ratna posthumously.

Coins unaccepted

Sir, — This is with reference to the clarification from the Reserve Bank of India that coins of small denominations are still legal tender. But shops in Jayanagar and J.P. Nagar and bus conductors are not accepting 25 paise coins. Employees of petrol stations and gas agencies do not return small change. As such, the prices of petroleum products should be rounded off.

Relocate stops

Sir, — I regularly commute to my office at Krishnarajapuram from Malleswaram by a four-wheeler in the morning. The travel time now ranges from 45 minutes to an hour, whereas it was just 30 minutes a year ago. The delay is mainly caused by the congestion at NGEF, Benniganahalli and Krishnarajapuram during peak hours. There are bus stops facing each other on the road, and hence movement of other vehicles is stopped when buses halt there in both directions. The stops should be relocated on either side or a bus bay should be formed as the one near Mayo Hall.

Power cuts

Sir — Announcement of power shutdown by Bangalore Electricity Supply Company for planned maintenance works is helpful. If the affected areas are listed alphabetically, it will be more helpful.

Accident spot

Sir, — The area close to BEML Arch near Kolar has become an accident spot. The BEML one-way road ends near the arch.

From there to Umashankar Theatre, the road is narrow. The vehicles move very fast at this point. This has affected the people of Vasanthnagar, Maruthinagar and Dasarahosahalli. Hence a road hump should be erected near the area.

G. Ganeshan,

Kolar.
