City deserves A-1 status: MP

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, OCT. 3. The Rajya Sabha member, P. Madhu, has demanded that A-1 status be granted to Hyderabad as the population of urban agglomeration has crossed the stipulated 50 lakh mark.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, Mr. Madhu cited the 2001 census figures according to which the population had crossed more than 57 lakhs. Since the population had crossed the criterion, as stipulated by the Fifth Pay Commission, the city should be given the A-1 status, he noted.

He recalled that the city was categorised in the `A' class along with Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai for almost three decades up to 1997 and the employees working here were drawing allowances such as HRA and CCA at the rate applicable to their counterparts in the four metros.
