Tennis
By Kamesh Srinivasan
NEW DELHI, OCT. 4. The leading Indian juniors had their say, as Tushar Liberhan and Karan Rastogi beat seeded players to make it to the pre-quarterfinals of the men's event of the DSCL National tennis championship at the DLTA Complex here on Monday. Tushar packed off the third-seeded Kamala Kannan, blanking the powerfully-built Chennai lad, a semifinalist here last year, in the decider. It was not exactly a surprise as Tushar had done well in the men's international tournaments. Karan, the best junior we have had for many years, was quite sharp in bundling out the seventh-seeded Ashutosh Singh, who himself has been playing quite well of late. The fifth-seeded V. M. Ranjeet had a lot to celebrate as he beat the finalist of the last edition, Dviij Sharan in three sets. Ranjeet came up with impressive passingshots in the climax and won a big round of applause for his spirited game. Vinod Sridhar subdued local lad Vivek Shokeen, to set up a second round with wild card Saurabh Singh who beat lucky-loser Arjun Goutham in three sets. In the women's section, the third-seeded Sonal Phadke was stretched to three sets by the talented left-hander Krushmi Chheda.
