THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, OCT. 4. The wives of six fishermen from Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam who were captured by the Pakistan Coast Guard in May for straying into its territorial waters launched an indefinite dharna in front of the Secretariat here today seeking the urgent intervention of the State and Central Governments for their earliest release. The CPI State assistant secretary, Panniyan Raveendran, inaugurated the dharna by the women, Dolly Pascas, Aleyamma Raju, Ritamma Varghese, Pushpam Joseph, Jaspin Vijayan and S. Aloysius. March held Hundreds of fishworkers took out a march from the Martyrs' Column to the Secretariat to support the dharna. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Raveendran warned the Governments of a stir by the fishermen community and other people, if necessary steps were not taken to seek the release. Joboy Pascas, Yesudasan Raju, Joseph Vincent, Stalin Alosius, Antony Vijayan and Jose Varghese put out to sea from Muscat on May 23 last. Their motorised boat which drifted out after developing a technical snag was captured by the Pakistan Coast Guard after five days at sea. The fishermen were jailed for three months and later released. According to the relatives, the sponsor in the Gulf and the Indian Embassy in Muscat had failed to respond despite repeated requests to secure their release. The dharna, which was wound up at 5 p.m., will continue tomorrow. The State president of the Kerala Swathantra Matsya Thozhilali Federation, T. Peter, said the officials in the office of the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, had informed them that the matter was being taken up at the highest level in New Delhi.
