Rural Internet centres popular, says Collector

By Our Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM, OCT. 4. The Kancheepuram Collector, R. Venkatesan, today thanked Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited for its cooperation in helping rural people communicate with the district administration via e-mail through the Rural Access to Internet (RASI) centres.

At a function held here to mark the launch of the Chengalpattu Telecom District directory, Mr. Venkatesan said but for the commitment shown by the telephone department, RASI centres would not have become a hit. The district administration had received 4,000 petitions and applications from rural people through 83 RASI centres functioning in the district.

The Principal General Manager (Operations), Tamil Nadu Circle, BSNL, T.S. Kuppuswamy, claimed that Tamil Nadu was the first State to cross 8 lakh cellular connections. While 5.70 lakh connections provided by the Tamil Nadu Circle, the rest was taken care of by Chennai Telephones.

The Tamil Nadu Circle had proposed to increase its line capacity by another 1 lakh to clear 70,000 wait list applications. However, the entire additional capacity would be provided using wireless in local loop technology.

Efforts were being taken to upgrade all rural exchanges in the circle for Internet connections. The demand for Internet service had increased by 100 per cent, he said .

Customers of both urban and rural exchanges can obtain the directory by producing the latest telephone receipt at the customer service centres in each division on the dates given below: Kancheepuram - October 8; Tiruvallur - October 12; Chengalpattu - October 20; Maraimalai Nagar - October 26; Ponneri and Gummidipoondi - October 27; Sriperumpudur, Tirutani and Madurantakam - November 1.
