Bangarappa not to campaign

By Our Staff Correspondent

Bidar Oct. 4. The former Chief Minister S. Bangarappa may not campaign for the BJP in the Bidar Lok Sabha byelection because of his disenchantment with the party. Party sources said that Mr. Bangarappa's decision had forced the district party unit to rearrange its campaign plans. Earlier, the party had formed four teams under the leadership of State unit president, H.N. Ananth Kumar; the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, B.S. Yediyurappa; K.S. Eshwarappa and Mr. Bangarappa. The teams were supposed to visit villages, clustered on the basis of various caste groups. Mr Bangarappa's team was to visit Aland, Kamalapur and Humnabad taluks, where the presence of Idigas is considerable. Now the reconstituted teams will cover these areas under different leaders. All the teams will take out a `padayatra' to cover over 126 select clusters of villages. Mr Bangarappa, who communicated his decision to the district-level leaders last week, has not mentioned any reason for his decision to stay away. But senior leaders connect this development to his conspicuous absence at Mr. Yediyurappa's birthday celebrations in Bangalore last week. "We have, however, decided not to request him to reconsider his decision," a senior leader said.

Talking to presspersons here, Mr. Kharge said the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) had informed the Government that it should be given a chance to present its case on the issue of allowing private operators to operate buses within a 20-km radium of cities and towns in the State since it was eating into the resources of the KSRTC and the other transport corporations. When the issue came up for discussion in the Cabinet, Mr. Kharge said he had taken strong exception to the new policy and asked the Law and Transport departments to legally study the issue and find a solution. He said he would look into the demand for introduction of more city buses in Gulbarga and to revive the City Bus Stand to operate city bus services.
