Bangarappa not to campaign
Bidar Oct. 4. The former Chief Minister S. Bangarappa may not campaign for the BJP in the Bidar Lok Sabha byelection because of his disenchantment with the party. Party sources said that Mr. Bangarappa's decision had forced the district party unit to rearrange its campaign plans. Earlier, the party had formed four teams under the leadership of State unit president, H.N. Ananth Kumar; the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, B.S. Yediyurappa; K.S. Eshwarappa and Mr. Bangarappa. The teams were supposed to visit villages, clustered on the basis of various caste groups. Mr Bangarappa's team was to visit Aland, Kamalapur and Humnabad taluks, where the presence of Idigas is considerable. Now the reconstituted teams will cover these areas under different leaders. All the teams will take out a `padayatra' to cover over 126 select clusters of villages. Mr Bangarappa, who communicated his decision to the district-level leaders last week, has not mentioned any reason for his decision to stay away. But senior leaders connect this development to his conspicuous absence at Mr. Yediyurappa's birthday celebrations in Bangalore last week. "We have, however, decided not to request him to reconsider his decision," a senior leader said.

Kharge wants decision changed
GULBARGA Oct. 4. The Water Resource Minister, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, who also holds the Transport portfolio, said today that the Transport Department had sought the reversal of the Government's decision to allow private bus operators to run bus services within a 20-km radius of cities and towns. Talking to presspersons here, Mr. Kharge said the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) had informed the Government that it should be given a chance to present its case on the issue of allowing private operators to operate buses within a 20-km radium of cities and towns in the State since it was eating into the resources of the KSRTC and the other transport corporations. When the issue came up for discussion in the Cabinet, Mr. Kharge said he had taken strong exception to the new policy and asked the Law and Transport departments to legally study the issue and find a solution. He said he would look into the demand for introduction of more city buses in Gulbarga and to revive the City Bus Stand to operate city bus services. Mr Kharge said he would examine the demand for providing laminated driving licences in the Gulbarga Regional Transport Office.

Plea to lease land to KIOCL
BANGALORE Oct. 4. Kudremukh Mazdoor Sangh (KMS) has urged the Government to lease the iron ore-rich areas of Ramanadurga in Bellary district to Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd. (KIOCL) to prevent over 12,000 people from becoming unemployed. The KMS president, Allampalli Venkataram, told presspersons here today that the State should act immediately as the Supreme Court had ordered that KIOCL should end its mining operations in the Kudremukh area by the end of 2005. The closure of the company would render 2,200 KIOCL employees and 10,000 others working in various capacities jobless. A vast area in Ramanadurga had been taken over by private concerns. Fortunately the "de-reserved" area, which came under block numbers 13, 14, 15 and 17, was still with the Government, he added.
Decision sought on medical college
SHIMOGA Oct. 4. The Shimoga Government Medical College Action Committee has warned the Government that it will give a call for `Shimoga Bandh' on October 30 if the Cabinet does not take a decision to set up a government medical college in Shimoga, before October 20. Announcing this at a press conference here today, the president of the action committee and general secretary of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, H.R. Basavarajappa, said it had become necessary for the committee to bring pressure on the Government in view of the reported opposition of a senior Minister to the proposal to start a government medical college in Shimoga. He declined to name the Minister who is said to be opposed to the proposal. He said preparations were on to mobilise support in all the taluks for the proposed bandh. The proposed bandh had the support of many prominent leaders, including the noted writer U.R. Ananthamurthy, he claimed. He hoped that the Government would take a decision soon to end the uncertainty over the proposal taking into consideration the growing resentment over the delay in the announcement.
