THANJAVUR, OCT. 4. Transplanted samba paddy crops in hundreds of acres were submerged in the Orathanadu area in this district following to heavy rain on last Thursday and Friday. The Thanjavur Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, along with Agriculture department officials, who inspected the submerged paddy crops at Vettikadu, Neivasal and Orathanadu told The Hindu yesterday that no damage was caused to the crops. He said the rains were beneficial to the standing samba paddy crops raised in the district. The Collector said the recently-transplanted samba paddy crops and nurseries raised in Chakkarakottai, Vettikadu, Pinnaiyur, Krishnapuram and Pugazh Sillathur in the Orathanadu taluk were submerged but the water was drained out from the fields by irrigation and agriculture department officials. Mr. Radhakrishnan instructed the officials to close the breach caused in the Azhiyar irrigation channel in Ulur and undertake repair works on a war-footing.
Mettur inflow doubles
There was a sudden increase in the inflow into the Mettur reservoir this evening at 16,907 cusecs, up from 7,715 cusecs last evening. The level in the dam rose by nearly one foot in the last 24 hours and stood at 86.81 feet (full level 120 feet). Irrigation officials told The Hindu that the increased inflow followed rain in the last few days in the upper reaches of the dam. The discharge for Cauvery delta irrigation was increased to 4,620 cusecs, up from 2,997 cusecs yesterday. The storage was 49.07 tmcft against the reservoir's full capacity of 93.4 tmcft. While supply from the Grand Anicut for irrigation in the Cauvery and Coleroon rivers was suspended for the second consecutive day, the Vennar and the Grand Anicut Canal were getting a meagre 496 and 100 cusecs this evening. Last night several parts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts recorded moderate rain, beneficial to the standing samba paddy crop and transplantation of samba and thaladi crops in the delta. Korayar, Muthupettai and Vettikadu recorded a rain of 25 mm each, Needamangalam, Thanjavur, Nagdudi and Mayiladuturai received below 10 mm.
