Raw deal for toddy tappers: BJP
Hyderabad: Members belonging to the BJP staged a dharna at Indira Park here today demanding withdrawal of GO No. 767 and protect the interests of toddy tappers. The dharna was led by the party president, N. Indrasena Reddy, B. Dattatreya, former Union Minister, and G. Kishen Reddy, floor leader in the Asssembly. The leaders threatened to launch a State-wide agitation along with other parties till justice was done to the tappers.
ZPTC member kidnapped?
KARIMNAGAR: The TRS Jammikunta ZPTC member, P. Jayarama Rao, was reportedly kidnapped from Challur in Veenavanka mandal on Monday morning. The police said Mr. Rao's son, Sridhar Babu, had lodged a complaint in Veenavanka police station on the alleged kidnapping of his father by an MPTC member, and some local leaders. He said his father went to Challur to meet his Veenavanka ZPTC counterpart.
VHP to move Supreme Court
HYDERABAD: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) is planning to file a caveat in the Supreme Court in connection with the quashing of the State Government's order by the High Court, providing 5 per cent reservations for Muslims in educational institutions and employment. Stating this to newsmen here on Monday, T. Muralidhara Rao, general secretary, and B. Manikyachary, president, Andhra Pradesh Paschim, they criticised the Government's plan to implement reservations for Muslims despite the judicial setback.
650 litres of ID arrack seized
Kakinada: Prohibition and Excise officials intercepted a country boat near Yetimoga in Upputeru on Sunday and seized 650 litres of illicitly distilled (ID) arrack concealed in bags. Two women -- Penubothu Kamesweri and Karri Dhanavati -- who were bringing the consignment from Giryampet in Yanam were arrested.
Tsundur case trial schedule
GUNTUR: The special court for hearing atrocities on Scheduled Castes and Tribes at Tsundur on Monday announced a new schedule for hearing the first 28 prosecution witnesses in the 1991 Tsundur massacre case, in which 10 Dalits were killed. They would be heard from November 11 to December 30 every Wednesday and Thursday.
TDP complaint against Danam
HYDERABAD: The TDP on Monday demanded recovery of expenditure for the conduct of the Asifnagar byelection from the Congress candidate, Danam Nagendar, as he had resigned "without a valid reason" and placed an "additional burden on the Election Commission." A party delegation, led by the former Minister, T. Srinivas Yadav, met the Chief Electoral Officer, M. Narayana Rao, and submitted a memorandum. Mr. Rao said this was first time such a demand had been raised in the State.
7-year jail for 3 in gangrape case
ELURU: The Additional Assistant Sessions Judge, P. Sridhar Rao, on Monday sentenced three youths of Pothunuru in West Godavari district to seven years rigorous imprisonment for their involvement in a gangrape. According to the prosecution, the youths--Davurla Nagaraju (26), Bodula Raju (27) and Merugu Chiranjeevi--raped a housewife (40) on October 16, 2002, when the victim went to the field for work.
Tribal woman dies of starvation?
NIZAMABAD: A tribal woman, Banoth Vijji (35), of Bhavanipet tanda in Machareddy mandal, reportedly died of starvation. According to information reaching here, Vijji had fallen ill due to lack of food for several days. Vijji's husband, Bhavu Singh, had committed suicide five years ago. It is second starvation death reported from the tribal village. A woman, Duli (28), died of hunger on September 27.
Farmer commits suicide
NIZAMABAD: A farmer, Thumu Pedda Malkanna (40), of Armoor committed suicide on Monday. Malkanna, hang himself to the ceiling in his home, unable to repay loans he had taken for sinking borewells in his field.
17th century Nandi idol stolen
NALGONDA: A 17th century Nandi idol was stolen from the historical Devarakonda fort by a suspected criminal gang early on Monday. Majid Ali Khan, SI, said the gang used a crane to lift the idol and sped away in a lorry.
Two trains detained
VIZIANAGARAM: Secunderabad-Howrah (Falaknuma Express) train was detained here on Monday from 11.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. and Hyderabad-Bhubaneswar (Visakha Express) train at Cheepurupalli from 10.15 a.m. to 1.45 p.m. following rail roko in Khurda Road division in Orissa, according to the Vizianagaram station Superintendent, D. Appa Rao. He said following the agitation in protest against postponement of gangmen recruitment, several trains, including Howrah-Chennai Mail, were running late.
Post office watchman killed
CUDDAPAH: Unidentified persons killed a watchman, Shaik Akthar Basha (50), in the head post office at Bosenagar in Rayachoti town and decamped with Rs. 1.17 lakhs around midnight on Sunday. According to the police, the watchman, who belonged to Patha Rayachoti, resisted the robbery attempt but was strangled to death. The dacoits broke open the lock and cash box and decamped with the booty after sprinkling kerosene in two rooms of the post office in a bid to mislead sniffer dogs.
Three House panels opened
Hyderabad: The Speaker, K.R. Suresh Reddy, unveiled three Assembly Committees on Monday and advised members to work for value addition to the House. He urged the committees to reduce pendency. Gade Venkat Reddy is chairman of the Committee on Privileges, H. Appaiah Dora heads the Committee on Subordinate Legislation while the Committee on Government Assurances is headed by E. Pratap Reddy.

TIRUPATI: K.V.Ramakrishna, Director of the TTD's Sri Venkateswara Employees Training Academy (SVETA), has secured first rank in the exam conducted for award of diploma in `Temple culture' conducted by the Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, a deemed university here. He was presented a gold coin for his performance. The SVETA chief, who has 19 PG diplomas and doctorates to his credit, is currently pursuing research on `Cyber crime' in Central University.

KURNOOL: The president of Geetha Prachara Sangham, D.V. Ramana, has said Durga Utsav will be celebrated from October 15 to 22. The central committee has asked locals to install Durga idols on their own while the committee would install the Gayatri Devi idol. Immersion of idols will take place on October 24. He said cultural programmes would be organised on October 23 religious discourses would be held every day by Manjusri of China Jeer Swamy order.
Plea for arrears
KURNOOL: Education volunteers working in primary schools in Kodumur mandal of Kurnool district have urged the authorities to pay the arrears for three months and 10 days last year. In a representation to the District Education Officer, Abdul Mannan, the volunteers, led by K. Kasimanna, said they had worked from June 2003 but wages were paid only from October. Later, the wages for June were released but the remaining amount was pending.

KURNOOL: G. Govinda Reddy of Padmachandra Kidney Centre has been nominated district president of Dalit Sena. Other office-bearers are P. Nagesudu, T.V. Durga Devi (vice-presidents), and S. Balaswamy (secretary).
Relay fast by TDP leaders
CUDDAPAH: The relay hunger strike by TDP functionaries in front of the Proddatur MRO office, decrying the removal of the TDP leader, Panyam Savithramma, from the Proddatur Municipal Chairperson post, entered the fourth day on Monday. The district TDP vice-president, Suvarna, and eight TDP functionaries undertook fast today. They alleged that Savithramma's removal was unwarranted and sought her reinstatement.
State-level award
MADANAPALLE: The Khadi and Village Industries Commission has awarded the State-level 2nd prize to M. C. V. Prasad of Asian Aromatic Oils, Madanapalle for the year 2003-04. The former Prime Minister, P. V. Narasimha Rao, gave away the prize at a function organised at Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad on October 2.
Camp to treat cleft lip
MADANAPALLE: A free camp was organised to treat people suffering from cleft lip at the Desai Thippareddi Hospital jointly by the Madanapalle Rotary Club and the Bangalore East Rotary Club on Sunday. Over 70 patients were selected for surgery. Doctors from the Ramachandra Medical Hospital, Chennai -- Atlaf Hussain, Madhu Sankar and Krishna Das treated the patients. The Rotary Club, Madanapalle, secretary, V. Reddenna, Bangalore East Club president, Venkateswaran, and others were present.
Rally by bank depositors
CHITTOOR: Depositors of the Cooperative Town Bank here took out a rally urging the Collector, S. S. Rawath, to arrest members of the bank's governing body for allegedly creating the financial crisis in the bank. They submitted a memorandum to the Collector requesting him to repay at least Rs. 10,000 to each depositor instead of Rs. 1,000 according to the RBI instructions. They wanted the Government to invest shares worth Rs. 50 crores in the bank to revive it.
Subsidised amla grafts
KARIMNAGAR: The Horticulture department has decided to supply Amla crop grafts on 50 per cent subsidy to farmers. The Amla varieties of Bhavani sagar-I and NA-7 have been made available by Gayathri Agrotech, Hyderabad. Each sapling costs Rs. 12.50 after the subsidy. Interested farmers could get permits from the local Horticulture Officer or from the office of the AD (horticulture), Karimnagar, a release said.
Collectors visit radar station
KARIMNAGAR: The Nizamabad District Collector, D. Venkateshwara Rayudu, and the Karimnagar District Collector, C. Parthasarathi, visited the cloud-seeding radar station in the Collectorate complex here on Monday. They interacted with representatives manning the station, and examined the radar, which is installed on a tower in the complex.
Agricultural labourer dies
KARIMNAGAR: An agricultural labourer, B. Tirupathi (28), who consumed pesticides on September 28 due to unemployment and increasing debt, died while undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Yellareddypet mandal on Sunday night.
Reports said the labourer was residing at Sanjeevaiahnagar in Sircilla town and had consumed pesticide unable to feed his family. He is survived by his widowed mother and sister.
DRDC to meet tomorrow
KHAMMAM: The district development review committee will meet here on October 6. The District incharge Minister, Koneru Ranga Rao, will attend. The DDRC will discuss, among other things, crop loans, irrigation needs, public health and drinking water supply, according to the District Collector, Rajendra Narendra Nimje.
