Army doctors in car rally

NEW DELHI OCT. 4. For the first time Army doctors are participating in four wheeler motorsports event - Maruti Suzuki 6th Raid de Himalaya Car Rally 2004, organised by Himalayan Motorsport Association of Shimla. The Army Medical Corps team, comprising of Lt. Col. A.V.K. Mohan and Maj. V.K. Bhatti, was flagged off by Lt. Gen. J.R. Bhardwaj, Director General Armed Forces Medical Services & Sr. Colonel Commandant, from the Army Hospital (Research & Referral) Parade Ground in Delhi Cantt. on Monday. The race beginning on October 7 will be run through areas in Manali, Lahaul & Spiti Valley and Ladakh.

Conference on environment

NEW DELHI OCT. 4. On the occasion of World Wildlife Week, the Salwan Group of Schools will be organising a two-day "National Conference on Environment" from October 7. The aim of the conference is to initiate a national movement on the need to preserve and prevent depletion of biosphere and provide an interactive forum for students to debate, discuss and express their ideas on environment-related issues.

Various non-government organisations (NGO) and eminent environmentalists will also take part in the event. An exhibition on environment will be inaugurated by the Deputy Secretary of Delhi's Department of Environment, P.V. Jayakrishnan, while the Director of the Centre for Science and Environment, Sunita Narain, will deliver the valedictory address.

Fashion show by kids

NEW DELHI OCT. 4. PP Design Estate, Pitampura, organised a fashion show by children to mark its showroom's first anniversary on Saturday. The fashion show was organised by Petal Play School, Pitampura, in which 60 children from different reputed schools like the Delhi Public School, Air Force School, St. Columba's and G.D. Goenka School took part.

Hindi month celebrations over

NEW DELHI OCT. 4. Punjab National Bank (PNB) concluded the Hindi month celebrations with a prize distribution function at its Central Staff College here. Speaking on the occasion, the Bank's Executive Director, K.C. Chakraborty, stressed the need of progressive use of Hindi.

"The efforts made by the Bank have been recognised by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Ministry of Home Affairs from time to time. We are also the recipient of first prize from RBI for house journal and also the Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Shield Award," he added.

Mr. Chakraborty presented "Rajbhasha Shield" and other prizes to the winning employees of various contests organised during the week. He also launched a special Hindi newsletter "IT Mirror" published by Information and Technology Division of the bank.

Spotlight on educational reforms

NEW DELHI OCT. 4. Eminent educationists and principals of reputed schools of Delhi met the United Kingdom's Minister of State for School Standards, David Miliband, on Sunday at an event jointly organised by the British Council and the National Progressive Schools' Conference at Springdales School in Dhaula Kuan here.

Interacting with those present on the occasion, Mr. Miliband said the goals of educational reforms were of high quality and excellence and were extremely essential for progressive education and building a global world.

Mr. Miliband visited the nursery and senior classes in the school, its Computer Resource Centre and the newly constructed Multi-Language Laboratory. He also interacted with the students and shared their views about the education system in India.

The Chairperson of National Progressive Schools' Conference and the Principal of Springdales School, Jyoti Basu, acknowledged the role of British Council's Education Division in India in carrying out many educational programmes for schools.
