COIMBATORE, OCT. 4. The Hindu Newspaper In Education (NIE) programme, designed to help children use the newspaper as an education tool, was launched in the city today. On day 1, students were taught what a newspaper was and how they could garner information from it. They learnt what the crest of The Hindu stood for and how to read and assimilate news articles. Thirty-one schools in the city are part of the programme. Under it, resource persons will visit all the schools in the programme and interact with the children on a daily basis. The format is designed in a manner that will draw the children out and help them communicate better. "Though the setting is a classroom, every effort will be taken to ensure that the NIE classes are different from the regular lectures the children get to listen in class," P. Raghu Rao of Prism Books, an NIE partner, said.
