Torrential rain in north coastal area, one dead

HYDERABAD, OCT. 4. North Coastal Andhra districts, especially Srikakulam, experienced torrential rain today as the depression in the sea began crossing the coast near Kalingapatnam.

Kalingapatnam itself received 270 mm of rain, highest in any place on a single day in the recent past, followed by Sompeta with 150 mm.

Almost all the places in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts reported very heavy rain -- 170 mm on an average.

The downpour left a trail of devastation and claimed one life. A farmer in Srikakulam, K.Jogaih, was washed away.

Meanwhile, the depression in the Bay crossed the coast near Kalingapantam this evening causing heavy rain in the north coastal Andhra.
