Weather

Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 27.7 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 22.9 degrees Celsius on Monday. Humidity, which was 95 per cent in the morning, dropped to 93 per cent in the evening. Rainfall of 48.9 mm was recorded from the night.

Commodity rates

The following are the prices (in rupees per kg) of the essential commodities in the local wholesale markets on Monday, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry: groundnut oil - Rs. 53, palmolein oil - Rs. 43, sunflower oil - Rs. 53, tamarind (flower variety) - Rs. 45 to 48, tamarind (karipuli variety) - Rs. 55 to 60, chillis (AC) - Rs. 23 to 28, chillis (non-AC) - Rs. 14 to 18, rice (2716) - Rs. 12, rice superfine (samba masoori) - Rs. 13 to 14, rice (sona masoori) - Rs. 15 to 16, black gram - Rs. 22, red gram - Rs. 28 to 32.50.

AIDWA campaign

Expressing concern over the increasing efforts of transnational companies to promote consumerism among Indian consumers, the All India Democratic Women's Association State committee member, Rama Devi, said that the AIDWA would shortly launch a movement to educate the people about the designs of the MNCs, which only aim at generating profits. The future course of action to be adopted by AIDWA is likely to be chalked out at the association State committee meeting to be held in Hyderabad from October 8 to 10. Speaking to reporters on Monday, she lamented that the portrayal of women in the electronic media and films was a fallout of the increasing consumerist tendencies in the country.

Date extended

In view of the widespread rain lashing the city, the last date of the CD exhibition cum sale being organized by the New Students Book Centre has been extended to October 7. In addition, new CDs on various topics have also been included in the exhibition in the interest of the customers.

Mental health

The Vijayawada West MLA, Sheik Nasarvali, inaugurated the "World mental health week" celebrations being organized by the Vennela Psychiatric Clinic in the city on Monday.
