JAIPUR, OCT. 5. The Jaipur-based Centre for Development Communication has bagged the 2004 Scroll of Honour award of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in recognition of its contribution to improvement in the living conditions of slum dwellers in the Rajasthan capital. The CDC trustee secretary, Vivek S. Agrawal, received the award in Nairobi on Monday. The award was presented by the President of Kenya, Emilio Mwai Kibaki, and Executive Director of the UN-Habitat, Anna Kajumulo Tibaijuka. Four other individuals and organisations also received the prestigious award. The CDC has been engaged in the municipal solid waste management since 1997, supplementing the Municipal Corporation's efforts in the face of growing urbanisation. The non-Government organisation runs a daily door-to-door waste collection programme involving rag-pickers and labourers. Dr. Agrawal, addressing the gathering on the occasion, said the members of his NGO had learnt the traditional wisdom and survival strategy of the communities, helping them communicate with the authorities and citizens to drive home the message of health for all. He regretted that the waste pickers -- generally found in the developing and under-developed countries -- had not been classified as a vulnerable group under any health programme and were not taken into consideration for safety against occupational health hazards.
