NEW DELHI, OCT. 5. The Union Government has released Rs 27.28 crores to Bihar under the Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Mission (RGDWM), a Centrally-sponsored Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme (ARWSP), as the first instalment for 2004-05. As per the ARWSP guidelines, 15 per cent of the funds under the scheme are meant for quality-related problems and five per cent for taking up water sustainability measures. The Union Rural Development Ministry has also released Rs 9.25 crores under RGDWM as an additional Central assistance to Bihar to meet the rural water supply needs arising out of the flood situation. The assistance is to be provided out of five per cent of the total Central Rural Water Supply outlay earmarked to meet the contingencies arising out of natural disasters. The funds would be utilised in the flood-affected areas. The Rural Development Ministry has directed the State to use these funds through the Panchayati Raj Institutions. The Ministry has also released Rs 12 crores to Rajasthan to provide safe drinking water in the drought-hit areas.
