LUCKNOW, OCT. 5 . The Election Commission (EC) today announced the poll schedule for eight seats of the UP Legislative Council to be held on November 6. Of the total seats, five would be biennial while by-elections would be held in the rest of the seats. State election office sources here said the seats where biennial polls would be held are Allahabad-Jhansi division (teachers) constituency, Kanpur teachers constituency, Gorakhpur-Faizabad division graduate constituency, Kanpur graduate constituency and Bareilly-Moradabad division graduate constituency. The tenure of these seats would expire on November 16. The by-elections would be held for Pratapgarh local bodies constituency, Muzaffarnagar-Saharanpur local bodies constituency and Lucknow-Unnao local bodies constituency. The Pratapgarh and Muzaffarnagar-Saharanpur seats were vacated by the Samajwadi Party candidates after they were elected to the Lok Sabha while the Lucknow-Unnao seat fell vacant after the death of SP MLC Ajit singh. According to the poll schedule, notification for the elections would be issued on October 12 while the last date for filing of nominations is October 19. Scrutiny of papers would be done the next day and candidates can withdraw their papers till October 23. Polling would be held on November 6 while counting would be taken up on November 8. Meanwhile, the BJP today asked the Election Commission to initiate bold steps like ordering shoot- at- sight orders against those indulging in booth capturing in the October 13 by-elections in order to ensure free and fair polling.
