'More border villages to be electrified'

By Our Staff Correspondent

DEHRA DUN, OCT. 5. With the successful electrification of some remote villages in Rajouri, Poonch and Kargil through the watermill power technology of the Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organisation (HESCO), the Army plans to electrify 300 more villages along the Indo - Pak border within the next one year under Project Sadbhavna.

Disclosing this at an exhibition held at the HESCO headquarters here today, Hari Prasad, Army Commander Northern Command, said that the Army now wanted to bring peace and prosperity through technology by empowering women and down trodden living in the areas along the border. "I am quite confident that the innovative empowerment schemes of HESCO will go a long way in improving the lot of the common man living in difficult terrains," Lt. Gen.Prasad said.

The Army Commander took much interest in the various products produced by local women using the HESCO technologies. These included the products of post harvest technologies like biscuits, pastries and cakes made out of traditional millets and pulses, jams, pickles and fruit juices and various handicraft items made from raw material available in the villages.

The army, Department of Technology and HESCO will soon establish an Army Biotechnology Centre at Udhampur. This centre will transfer technologies useful at the grass roots level to the people living in the border areas."We at HESCO aim at reaching need-based rural technologies to the villagers and the opportunity given to us by the Government in Jammu and Kashmir will open new vistas of self- empowerment for the people who have had to face the brunt of backwardness and hostile activities of the enemy for decades," said Anil Joshi, patron of HESCO.
