By Our Staff Correspondent
HASSAN, OCT. 5. The carcass of a fifteen-year-old female elephant was found at the Bysore Reserve Forest area of Arkalgud taluk in Hassan district on Monday. Surappa, a cowherd, who found the dead elephant, informed the Forest Department about it. Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, the Deputy Conservator of Forests, S. Shekar, said that the elephant had died under mysterious circumstances. He also said that there was no conclusive evidence for the cause of death. Nagaraj, veterinary doctor, Wildlife Wing, Mysore division, who conducted the post-mortem on the animal, said that he did not find any internal haemorrhage or external bleeding. He said that the animal might have died due to a disease. Mr. Shekar also ruled out the possibility of death by shooting. He said that an elephant could be killed only if a shot was fired at its head. He also said that though a few pellets were found on the back of the animal's body, no bullet had been recovered during the post-mortem. The animal would have bled profusely in case of a bullet injury. He also ruled out the likelihood of death owing to electrocution. He said that the first information report (FIR) had been filed and the Range Forest Officer, Arkalgud, was investigating the case. Mr. Shekar said this was the first incident reported in Hassan division after the death of an elephant owing to electrocution in March 2003.
