MANGALORE, OCT. 5. Mulki, a small town near here, will witness an unique attempt to recreate the magic of rustic life with the first ever "Nadu Nade-Nudi Utsava" to be held on Saturday. The utsav has been organised by the Mulki hobli unit of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project, and the Mulki Zone Journalists' Association. Harikrishna Punaroor, president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, told presspersons here on Monday that modern living was increasingly becoming stereotyped and the plurality and diversity seen some 50 years ago was now missing. He opined that this had resulted in a situation where people were becoming unfamiliar with the life, culture and heritage of the country. "Even the rural base of our lives is gradually falling prey to modernisation spurred by globalisation," he said.
Alternatives
Mr. Punaroor noted that the rural development project started by the Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala, D. Veerendra Heggade, had not only shown the way out of this vortex but also put forth viable alternatives to protect the rural economy such as setting up of self-help groups and Stree Shakti groups. Sarvotham Anchan, president of the parishat's Mulki hobli unit, said the utsav was an attempt to recreate the charm and simplicity of village life. It was also an attempt to bring rural people from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts on a common platform, he added. Noting that the event would be a confluence of the Kannada and Tulu languages and their culture and heritage, Mr. Anchan said more than 2,000 villagers from the two districts were expected to participate in the utsav.
Procession
A procession showcasing the "rural way of life" would be taken out from Karnad Gandhi Maidan, Mulki, to Bappanadu, venue of the utsav, he said. Nearly 50 tableaux depicting the rural life and 50 cultural teams would be part of the procession, which would wind its way through the main streets of Mulki and along National Highway No. 17, he said.
Felicitation
Mr. Anchan said the organising committee of the utsav had decided to honour 25 people who had contributed to the local language, culture and heritage. While Mr. Punaroor would inaugurate the utsav, Somappa Suvarna, former MLA, would inaugurate the procession. The Chairman of the Kannada Development Authority, B.M. Idinabba; the Chief Whip of the Ruling Party in the Legislative Assembly, K. Abhayachandra Jain; and others would be the chief guests. Various sessions and cultural programmes would attempt to highlight rural lifestyle, he added.
