GULBARGA, OCT. 5. The State unit of the Janata Dal (U) today reacted strongly to the decision of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre to wind up the Justice S.N. Phukan Commission probing the Tehelka exposé on defence deals and hand over the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). It described the move as "political vendetta and witch hunting."
`No moral right'
The senior vice-president of the party, Basavaraj Ingin, told presspersons here that the UPA Government "with tainted Ministers in the Cabinet" had no moral right to take such a decision aimed at harassing the leaders of the main Opposition parties. He said that there was no valid reason for scrapping the Justice Phukan Commission, which was on the verge of completing its inquiry. He also condemned the statement of the Union Law Minister that there was no need for a Commission of Inquiry when "concrete evidence was in the tapes." The decision to hand over the Tehelka case to the CBI, a government agency working directly under the Union Home Ministry, was to target the Opposition leaders and make them scapegoats to gain political mileage, he charged.
Concern
Replying to questions, Mr. Ingin said the Janata Dal (U) was not afraid to face any kind of inquiry into the Tehelka exposé, but was only concerned about the action of the Union Government in handing over the investigation to one of its agencies, the CBI. The party still believed that the probe should be conducted by either a retired or a sitting Supreme Court judge. The UPA Government, which had failed to deliver the goods and implement the promises made to the people before the elections, was now indulging in such acts to divert the attention of the people, he charged.
