Cash awards for Athens Olympians

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, OCT. 5. The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, presented cash awards to the 2004 Athens Olympians, J. J. Shobha (heptathlon), Sathi Geeta (4 x 400 m relay), Arjuna Awardee Mithali Raj and weightlifter Satish Rai at his official chambers here today.

Both Ms. Shobha and Ms. Geetha were presented Rs.5 lakhs each for taking part in the finals of their respective disciplines in the Athens Olympics. Mr. Satish Rai was given Rs.4 lakhs for winning a silver medal in the inaugural Afro-Asian Games held in Hyderabad last October.

Belated honour

For Ms. Mithali Raj, it was better late than never, as she missed the previous function being busy representing Railways in the national women's cricket tournament. She was given Rs.1 lakh. Incidentally, for the first time, the State Government also honoured the Arjuna Awardees with cash awards of Rs.1 lakh and it may be recalled that former world junior champion Koneru Humpy and M. Srinivasa Rao (physically challenged - badminton) were honoured by the Chief Minister last week.

Government thanked

All the athletes thanked the Government for the gesture and promised to live up to the expectations in future. Mr Satish Rai, who is now training in the SAI Southern Centre (Bangalore), is employed in Union Bank after getting the transfer before the 2002 National Games as part of the then `import policy' when many outstation athletes represented the State. Since technically he represents the State, he has been presented the cash award this year.

Sumita Dawra, vice-chairperson and managing director of SAAP, introduced the athletes to the Chief Minister. A. S. V. Prasad, technical advisor to State Government (Sports), and officials from Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association were also present.
