Tuticorin
By Our Staff Reporter
TUTICORIN, OCT. 5. The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Tuticorin, has urged the Centre to introduce trains between Tuticorin and Mangalore and Coimbatore. Speaking to The Hindu , the Chamber president, D. R, Kodeeswaran, said that as there was no direct trains, the old and physically challenged entrepreneurs were finding it difficult to commute between Tuticorin and Coimbatore. A majority of small-scale entrepreneurs, who could not afford to travel by car, were relying on buses, he pointed out. Direct train services between Mangalore and Tuticorin "will help to increase the passenger and goods traffic in the sector," Mr. Kodeeswaran said. The Chamber also wanted the Government to introduce an inter-city train between Tuticorin and Madurai, to help the businessmen of Tuticorin board the north-bound, long distance trains from Kanyakumari, Nagercoil and Tirunelveli. Such a train could also prove beneficial to those who had to visit Madurai to attend court cases in the High Court Bench.
`Expedite overbridge construction'
Mr. Kodeeswaran also demanded steps to expedite the work on the construction of the overbridge at the third gate junction here, which had come to a standstill. The Southern Railways' decision to increase the running time of the Pearl City Express between Tuticorin and Chennai Egmore by over 30 minutes had annoyed the businessmen, as the running time of all other trains was being reduced, he said. At least, five more coaches, he suggested, should be added to the Pearl City Express to avoid rush.
