Cuddapah
By Our Staff Reporter
CUDDAPAH, OCT. 5. Government doctors sported black badges and struck work from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Cuddapah Government Hospital on Tuesday demanding that the Government institute a judicial enquiry into the ransacking of Gandhi Hospital by engineering students.
Action sought
Addressing doctors at the main gate of the Government hospital here, the district president of A.P. Government Doctors Association, V. Rami Reddy, and Indian Medical Association secretary, V. Jamaal Basha, alleged that the students' attack was a planned one. Demanding stern action against those guilty, they claimed that the injured engineering student, Mahender, was given timely treatment. They demanded protection to doctors and para-medical staff in the State. The doctors did not attend on outpatients, but only examined emergency cases. This caused some inconvenience to patients. Doctors -- Kumaraswamy, Konda Reddy, Giridhar, Chandrababu, Yadavendra Reddy, Pandurangaiah, Ramesh Kumar, Ananthalakshmi, Madhavi Latha, Guravaiah and Prasad -- participated in the protest.
Protection urged
Meanwhile, the Proddatur Government Hospital Superintendent, Ramesh Nath, demanded a legislation for protection of doctors. Doctors and nurses sported black badges and stayed away from duties from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Decrying the attack on Gandhi Hospital and its doctors and nurses, they maintained that doctors would do their best to save patients' lives. They demanded the arrest of the erring students and charged the latter with taking law into their hands.
Services hit
ANANTAPUR: Functioning of the General Hospital attached to the Government Medical College here came to a standstill, as the doctors boycotted duties throughout the day. They did not even go on rounds (check-up) in the morning in all in-patient wards. Out patients, who arrived from different parts of the district, had to return without being examined. They attended only emergency cases and staged a dharna in front of the out patient block under the aegis of AP Government Doctors' Association hospital branch. Along with the students of the medical college, they took out a rally and staged a rasta roko in Sapthagiri Circle. The protest was led by the APGDA leaders, Ramanjula Naidu and Shankar Naidu. Doctors also decided to boycott rounds in the night.
