Awards for NTPC employees

NEW DELHI OCT. 5. Four employees of the National Thermal Power Corporation were presented the prestigious Shram Awards by the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, here on Monday.

Two employees from the Dadri power station of NTPC received the rare honour, "Shram Bhushan", while another two from NTPC's Singrauli power station received the covered "Shram Vir" Award for 2002.

The recipients of Shram Bhushan -- Vishnu Kant Singh Kushwaha and Manjeet Singh of Dadri -- received a cash award of Rs.1,00,000 to be shared and a "sanad" each, while the Shram Vir winners from Singrauli -- Sarbada Mishra and Pancham Prasad -- received Rs.60,000 to be shared and a sanad each.

Policy to check diabetes

NEW DELHI OCT. 5. The Centre will soon announce a national policy for control and prevention of diabetes, the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, A. Ramados, declared at the recently concluded Diabetes Mela organised by the Delhi Diabetes Research Centre (DDRC) at the Talkatora Gardens here earlier this week.

Stating that more such melas were need to create awareness about diabetes so that steps could be taken to prevent it, the Minister also released a book on diabetes, "Diabetes Quiz Book'', which has been authored by DDRC chairman, Ashok Jhingan.

Dr. Jhingan said the sixth edition of the Diabetes Mela attracted more visitors than its previous versions. The number of hospitals and pharmaceutical firms was also higher and this facilitated the flow of knowledge and the conduct of free tests and discounted sales of medicines during the three-day event, which concluded on October 3.

Gaur meets Montek

NEW DELHI OCT. 5. The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Babulal Gaur, today met the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, to seek Central assistance of Rs.1,400 crores for forest conservation, improvement of roads in the State and a plan to bring Narmada waters to the State capital, Bhopal.

Contending that Madhya Pradesh is a backward State, Mr. Gaur hoped the current formula of Central assistance where the loan is 70 per cent and the grant 30 per cent would be changed to 50:50.

According to a State Government spokesman, Mr. Ahluwalia "agreed with most of the points raised by the Chief Minister" and decided to convene a special meeting of the Chief Ministers of Northern States to discuss these issues. "He also assured the Chief Minister that forest conservation, Bhopal Narmada Payjal Yojana and improvement of roads would be dealt with on a priority basis".

Sachdeva's bail refused

NEW DELHI OCT. 5. A Delhi court today refused to grant bail to Sudheer Sachdeva, chairman of the Sachdeva New P.T. College coaching institute here, in the case of leak of the question papers of the Central Board of Secondary Education-conducted (CBSE) All-India Pre-Medical Test in April this year.

Rejecting his bail application, the Metropolitan Magistrate, Shahbuddin of the Karkardooma courts here, said that the accused did not deserve bail at this stage. Sacheda had surrendered before the MM court last month following rejection of his anticipatory bail by the Delhi High Court.

Sachdeva was first questioned in July by the Economic Offences Wing of the city police in connection with the case when he appeared before it after grant of anticipatory bail by the Orissa High Court.
