VELLORE, OCT.5. Four persons, including a notorious sandalwood smuggler turned illicit arrack distiller of Katpadi, were arrested following unearthing of an illegal arrack unit producing 50 ml arrack sachets with Karnataka label in a village under the Nemili police station limits in Arakkonam taluk on Monday night. Acting on information, a team of police personnel swooped on the illegal unit located in a building constructed in the midst of an eucalyptus grove at Thurayur Mottur near Panapakkam. The team seized a Maruti car, a Tata Qualis, a Tata Sierra and two two-wheelers used for transporting arrack sachets, rectified spirit, and two machines used for producing, packing and labelling the sachets. In all, contraband worth Rs.50 lakhs was seized. N. Rajasekaran, Superintendent of Police, Vellore district, told The Hindu on Monday that one of the arrested `Maruti' Kumar alias Kora Krishnan of Katpadi was involved in smuggling of sandalwood oil cans from the Sandalwood Oil Factory of the Tamil Nadu Forest Plantation Corporation at Thekkupattu near Tirupattur a few years ago. He had obtained an illegal power connection through underground cables to his arrack unit. He used to transport the arrack daily to Palamaner and Chittoor areas in Andhra Pradesh and to Karnataka in the three cars. The Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Srilakshmi Prasad, lauded the police team. The arrested persons `Maruti' Kumar (37), Swaminathan (35) of Tirupattur and Raja (20) and Dhananjayan (27) of Thurayur Mottur were produced before the Judicial Magistrate, Arakkonam, who remanded them to custody.
