Headhunting fair to be held next month

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, OCT. 5. Managemantra 2004, the third edition of the annual event organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry-Southern Region (CII-SR) to enable industrial houses spot potential recruits among final year students of management schools and institutes, will be held here on November 5 and 6.

Management schools and institutes from the region will be allowed to sponsor up to 10 participants each this year, compared to 4 last year. Fifty institutes and 30 industrial houses are expected to participate in this year's event. Besides letters of offer that participating companies are likely to make at the end of the five-step individual-cum-group contests, some spot appointments are also expected to be issued, according to P.K. Mohapatra (RPG Enterprises), Chairman, CII Education Sub-Committee, and R. Ramaraj (Sify), Chairman of Managemantra 2004.

The CII leaders told journalists that this year's event would be held at TIDEL Park to enable students and faculty familiarise themselves with the emerging business environment. (The earlier two management career fairs were held at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras).

150 placements

Out of 245 student participants from 40 colleges in last year's event, 227 were given letters of offer by 25 industrial houses, resulting in some 150 actual placements. Companies that selected talent in the fair included Ford, Pepsi and Sify, besides the CII itself.

According to Soundarya Rajesh, CEO of Avtar Career Creators, ``knowledge partners'' of the CII-SR, a rigorous assessment process would be held in the two days to measure verbal and numerical ability, team handling, presentation ability, business acumen and stress tolerance and individual value systems. Besides the contests, industry experts would hold two panel discussions on talent requirements of different industries.

Mr. Mohapatra said though the participation of large indigenous manufacturing industry was on a par with that of foreign companies and multinationals in Managemantra, the small and medium enterprises (SME) sector was still proving a "hard nut to crack" and had failed to take advantage of it.

Cash prizes of Rs. 50,000, Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 20,000 would be given to best student participant, besides Rs. 5,000 to other finalists. Institutions interested in participating may contact the CII-SR office in Chennai or kalpana.ganesh@ciionline.org for registration before October 25.
