Attached to deemed varsity
CHENNAI Oct. 5. The Centre has attached the SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Kattankulathur, near here, to the SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai (deemed university), subject to its not admitting any student without the Medical Council of India (MCI) approval. The Government has conferred this status under the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956 on the advice of the UGC. Any advertisement/public notice issued by the institute in the interim period will specify that the inclusion of the medical college within the ambit of the deemed university is provisional and subject to the MCI approval.
New I-T Chief Commissioner
CHENNAI Oct. 5. Binoy Gupta has taken over as the Chief Commissioner of Income-Tax, Chennai. Dr. Gupta was till recently the Chief Commissioner of I-T, Hubli, (Karnataka region).
Woman raped, commits suicide
VELLORE Oct. 5. An official of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has been arrested today on the charge of raping his colleague's wife in her house at Sathuvachari here on Monday. According to the police, Mohan Rao Naidu (38), manager (technical), NHAI, Belgaum visited the house of Jaganmohan Rao (38), his long-time friend and colleague in the on-going Chennai-Bangalore NH 4-laning project on Monday. Since Mr. Rao had a meeting to attend in Chennai, he left after requesting Naidu to stay in his house till he returned. But Naidu allegedly exploited his friend's absence and raped his 32-year-old wife when her children were away in school. She attempted suicide by hanging. When Mr. Rao returned home, he saw his wife struggling for life. Though he immediately took her to the Christian Medical College Hospital, she died on the way. The police have arrested Mohan Rao Naidu and are interrogating him.
Office-bearers elected
CHENNAI Oct. 5. N. Tarachand Dugar has been elected Chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Board of the All-India Manufacturers' Organisation for 2004-05. K.E. Ragunaathan and P.C. Doraisamy have been elected Vice-Chairmen and S.V. Ravi, has been elected treasurer, says a release.
Raid on constable's house
SALEM Oct. 5. Officials of the Salem unit of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DV & AC) today raided the house of a police constable here on charges of his accumulating assets disproportionate to known source of his income. Official sources said Prabhakaran, worked as a driver-cum-constable for the then Assistant Commissioner of Police (Salem West). The four-hour raid resulted in seizure of documents. The Assistant Commissioner's house in Coimbatore was also searched. The raids followed allegations that they were involved in a computer-based `Business Solution' firm which had cheated the public of vast sums a few years ago.
Woman set afire
CUDDALORE Oct. 5. Within a fortnight of her marriage, Balasulochana (24), nursing student, was allegedly set afire yesterday in her house at Kattumannarkoil. Based on her dying declaration, the police have arrested her husband, Maniselvam (30). Police said Maniselvam, a BBA graduate, was addicted to liquor. Balasulochana had been urging him to give up the habit. On Monday, she doused herself and threatened to immolate herself after he came home inebriated. But, he threw a lighted matchstick on her.
Mettur discharge increased
NAGAPATTINAM OCT. 5 . The discharge from the Mettur reservoir was increased today to 10,019 cusecs up from 4,620 cusecs last evening. The inflow was 15,141 cusecs against 16,907 cusecs last evening. The water level stood at 83.53 feet (full level 120 feet). The storage stood at 49.87 tmcft against the full capacity of 93.4 tmcft. From the Grand Anicut, the Vennar and the Grand Anicut Canal were getting 1,538 cusecs and 1,500 cusecs this evening. Supply in Cauvery and Coleroon remained suspended for irrigation. Some parts of Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and Tiruvarur received moderate rain less than 20 mm.
TNEB workers threaten stir
CHENNAI Oct. 5. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Workers' Progressive Union has served notice on the TNEB authorities and the State Labour department of its plan to go on strike on or after October 30. In its charter of demands, it cited non-revision of wages and demands for 20 per cent bonus, immediate payment of a 9 per cent dearness allowance hike and filling of 20,000 vacant posts of helpers, S. Rathinasabapathy, general secretary, said.
Seven DMK men set free
VILLUPURAM Oct. 5. The Judicial Magistrate (Court-I), Chinnasamy, on Monday ordered the release of seven Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam men in the case of damage to an All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam banner. The Magistrate said there was no conclusive evidence to prove that the DMK men had damaged the banners. Venkatesan, Babu, Siva and Thirumalai and three others had been taken into custody on charges of destroying the banners put up for the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's visit to Villupuram on February 27, 2003.
Murdered
ERODE OCT.5. The body of 30-year-old male was recovered today. On a tip-off from boys tending their goats at Pattuthurai village near Moolanure police launched a search and found the body with the neck tied with a rope and hands tied behind. The identity of the youth is not yet established.
Life term
ERODE OCT.5. The district and sessions Judge, R. Mohandass awarded life sentence to a worker for murdering his wife. The prosecution case was that Sagunthala, 30, could not bear the harassment of her husband, Mani a worker, came to Vaniputhur from Coimbatore, and living with her father. Mani came there on September 10, 2003 and wanted her to come with him. On her refusal, Mani took an old cycle tube, tied her neck and strangled her.
Two arrested
ERODE OCT.5. Two persons were arrested on a complaint from some graduates and women. About 50 persons gathered before the house of Nagarjan, a dismissed bank employee at Moolapalayam, Erode and wanted repayment of money. They said Nagarajan had collected over Rs one crore from 65 graduates and 55 women, promising them that he would get them employment in nationalised banks, Central and State Government offices and other big institutions and collected huge money. Nagarajan and his office assistant, Kavitha are being questioned.
Killed
Krishnagiri Oct.5. A 20-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run road accident at Mathigiri here yesterday. According to the police, Gopi of Bairamangalam was travelling on a motorcycle towards Hosur when a tempo hit him and sped away.
Found murdered
TUTICORIN OCT 5. A 56-year-old woman was found murdered at a house at the Sankarateri Housing Board Colony here today. A police team rushed to the spot and started an investigation. Sniffer dogs were pressed into service. The police said the woman died because of suffocation. A 10-sovereign chain was missing from her person.
Direct purchase centres
NAGERCOIL OCT. 5. The Tamil Nadu Civil Supply Corporation has opened direct purchase centres at Konam, Udayarvilai and Kappukadu in Kanyakumari district for farmers to sell their produce for better price. The Collector, Rajesh Lakhoni, said the Government fixed Rs. 590 a quintal for the `A' grade variety and Rs. 560 for the common grade. Farmers have raised the first crop on 12,000 hectares, and harvest has been completed on 9,100 hectares.
Phone scheme
NAGERCOIL OCT. 5. The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited's scheme to provide landline connections afresh (land lines), will be effective till October 31, according to the General Manager, Vijaya Kumaran. Under the scheme, no rent will be collected for the period of disconnection, if the outstanding dues are cleared.
Power shutdown
THENI OCT. 5. There will be no power supply between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Wednesday in the following areas served by the Mathurapuri sub-station: Mathurapuri, Annanji, Alli Nagaram, Letchumipuram, Krishnapuram, Karuthupatti, Vadapudhupatti, Meenakshipuram and nearby areas.
Exhibition
of dolls
Thanjavur Oct.5 . The exhibition of dolls put up by the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation was inaugurated here today. Dolls of national leaders, musical instruments, various games, wild and domestic animals form part of the exhibition. Icons, Thanjavur art plates, garlands made of sandal, gift articles from Moradabad have also been exhibited. Price ranges from Rs. 25 to Rs. 550. According to R.Kalaimani, Regional Manager, Poompuhar, the exhibition will be kept open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. till October 23.
Training programme
Thanjavur Oct.5. The Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, today said that three per cent of group houses constructed by the Government have been reserved for handicapped persons. Speaking at the valedictory of the training programme, organised jointly by the National Centre for the Blind and the District Centre for rehabilitation of handicapped persons, for 58 head masters of schools, he said that the head masters, who were trained in handling blind persons should teach other teachers and members of voluntary organisations. He asked the youth to donate eyes. A. K. Mittal, Regional Director, National Centre for the Blind, and Shyamala, District Rehabilitation Officer, participated in the function.
